6 months post opp for multi fusion L3 L4 L5, I started to get pain right side above hip, my consultant has told me I may have low grade infection and will require a picc line for intravenous to administer anti biotics. This requires a home visit by a district nurse 3 times a day. Has any one had a picc line, any info would be helpfull.
One of my colleagues grandson has had this. Unfortunately had to spend two weeks in hospital over Christmas and district nurse is in every second day till he can basically jab himself. Can't offer any advice other than let them do what they need to do. Sounds like you've been through it and then some. Hope things get better soon.
Hi, I deal with pic lines every day as part of my job. We go to people who need a long course of intravenous antibiotics. The picc should be placed at the top of your arm n normally covered/wrapped with a bandage & unaware of this. Picc lines are great if you need a long course of intravenous antibiotics because you don't need to cannulate a patient every few days, the lines can be left in for a long period. Hope this helps
Thank you for your reply. After I have the intravenous antibiotic will I be able to get up or do I need to rest, I have read the process will take 1hour plus preperation time is that correct, Are you aware of side effects
from these strong antibiotics,
We let our patients continue with normal activities (may need to be slower pace if not feeling to good)
You can go about normal things, it does take around an hour as the nurse will prep the medication & will need to monitor your observations prior to infusion.
They can be side effects to all medications the nurse should explaine them all to yourself before administration.
