I had a very overactive thyroid problem a few years ago, and was on Methimazole for over a year until I became somewhat underactive. After that my thyroid seemed fine for a couple of years. In the last 4 months, my TSH has gone from 4.22 to .81, while all the other numbers have remained normal. Should I be concerned? I have gained a considerable amount of weight in the last 4 months, but that may be due to the fact that I am also a type 1 diabetic, and am now using a Dexcom CGM. I tend to overtreat lows....
It appears you are going from high to low and back. The people I have seen this happen to often have Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves plus Hashimoto's. Hashi patients are very sensitive to the meds both the thyroid blocking and the thyroid replacement meds. A lady on this Board was like this and she got great control of her disease using Regular L-Carnitine and Vitamin D. She measured her temperature every day and adjusted dosages accordingly. I would ask my doc to test for both those antibodies.
I have a feeling my doctor will just want me to get rid of my thyroid altogether.... I know him, and he already warned me that I could end up needing to do that....
Doctors are trained a certain way. That's all that they know. I work well in partnership with my doc but my recovery and remission happened because I became an empowered patient and learned all I could about what would be helpful to it. When I added supplements to my medical treatment, I thrived. It is your right to have a proper diagnosis and antibody tests will be more definitive of the cause for your hyper and hypo thyroidism. From the postings I have seen on this board, Hashi's is even more difficult to regulate than Graves so you need to learn all you can from people who have been successful in managing their disease.
HI all, while L Carnitine may have positive effects on a short term there are recent studies suggesting it might also help trigger certain types´ of cancer.
I have discontinued it as a result.
Better safe as the saying goes.
I understand. If I read something like that, I would certainly give that some thought and want to investigate further as carnitine is an amino acid normally found in our body. Currently if I take it at all, it is at a very low dose. It has done what I wanted and needed it to do for me at the higher dosages.
Hi tatiana12, I would like to read about the studies you mentioned above. Could not find much on the internet. Would be great if you can give some more details. Thanks.
