Hi all, it’ll have been a week tomorrow since TRH, going ok and taking day by day. knee really swollen and tight behind also however, last night lower leg swollen including ankle. is this normal ?
Have tried elevating with out pain or pulling in the groin and unfortunately i sleep in a sitting postion .
Hi, I am 5 1/2 weeks post op after bilateral hip replacement. I also had swelling, in both legs, and this took about 4 weeks to clear. The swelling in my thighs went down first, then my calves cleared just leaving swollen ankles and feet which cleared last. Apparently swelling is quite normal after this type of operation. I tried elevating my feet but this didnt appear to make any difference with me and just took time to go down. Both legs now look perfectly normal and all the tightness has gone. Good luck with your recovery.

Thank you and glad your on the road to recovery. Good luck.
elevating feet daily really helped me- i also had bi lateral - my knees still feel ‘squishy’ on the inside and tight when i bend right down had mine done on 9th July this year - will go in time- be patient - x good luck in recovery
I just had both of mine done. I had no swelling other than at the site… maybe try ice pack?
Hiya ![]()
Very common for swollen leg / knee after the THR, I’m just short of 4 weeks post op.
My operated leg had some bad swelling and the knee, over the last couple of weeks it has got better, my knee is still a little swollen and tight at the back of the knee.
Try to get some elevation every day, even if it’s only an hour, so yep it’s all very normal and another couple of weeks from now it’ll be a lot better,
keep up with the exercises and slow but sure a little walking.
Sleeping in a sitting position you say ! ![]()
is this in bed or in sofa etc, all the best for your recovery, sounds like you doing fine and all the best for your recovery.![]()

Pete…
Hi Pete,
Thank you for your reply and reassurance. You seem to be doing great. Yes, doing exercises and little walks but often. Lots of pillows in my bed so it feels like my top torso is elevated , I will drop down to a more horizontal position once it becomes more comfortable however this is
neither comfortable haha
Thank you
Gail
