LS and cystitis

I've had LS for 20 years and used to get regular cystitis. I recently had a bad flare up so used dermovate cream and wham! Very bad cystitis, in agony, passing blood clots, ended up at hospital one evening. Had a course of trimethoprim which quickly eased it but still feel very sore in my urethra. I'm scared to use dermovate now in case it starts off again. Can anyone recommend anything else please?

Hi there. I think that it is unlikely to be the steroid causing your cystitis, more likely a backlash from your flare up. I would ring your GP for a telephone consultation and ask the questions. I am sure that they can help. Good luck.

Thanks will do x

Let us know how you get on.

Be careful were you apply the cream make sure you don't put it to near the urethra I did that and wow was I in pain it felt i had cystitis but a urin test showed I didn't if took weeks to settle back down

I agree with Gillian1956. I had this discussion with my Gynae Dr yesterday. Avoid the urethral area completely.

I had exactly the same issue, urgency, frequency, spasm, incontinence!  Turns out when I was told to 'cover the whole area' with the steroid cream, she meant the labia and perineum. I do find it a bit difficult to be so precise, as my labia have virtually disappeared. She said my symptoms were commonly experienced by women who put the steroid on the urethral opening. I think it would have been a good idea to make that clear from the outset.

When I started getting the peeing issues a different GP prescribed Vagifem pessaries which quickly eased the problem. She also gave me Ovestin cream to use intravaginally once a week but Gynae today said if the urethral issues began again to use a tiny amount of the Ovestin on the urethral opening.

Can't advise about alternatives to steroids. Good luck :-)

Thanks so much for the very useful info. I have been putting the dermovate all over!!! Must be more careful x

Thanks GillIan for good advice x
