Just wondering if anyone has had issues with swimming with LS? I have joint issues and have a hard time with cardio. Swimming is low impact and am hoping it won't be a problem.
Hi Nikki, I was ok at first but despite using Vaseline as a barrier cream, the chlorine + nylon of the cozy became too much so I had to stop my aqua aerobics which like you, I had started because of my joints. My LS continues unabated and I am now being referred to a gyny too. My dermy had said mine was the worst case he had seen so hopefully you will react in a more positive way and not be affected by the chemicals used in pools nowadays. Good luck and keep exercising whichever way you can.
I was advised to use a mini-trampoline/rebounder, not to jump up and down, side to side, etc. but just to walk or march on the spot. 5 min. on the rebounder supposed to be equivalent to 20 min. walk, also excellent for cardio-vascular and the lymphatic system. I bought a rebounder for about AU$50. and I see in the US, they cost about $30.
I used to go swimming twice a week until I was diagnosed with LS, I was having trouble with soreness and the itching but just thought it was just part of being in the menopause but it he symptoms were always worse after swimming. I asked my consultant if it was wise to continue and he advised me to stop because of the effect of the chlorine in the water , on me. Now I just go walking when ever I can, I stick to my regime of no sugar in my diet, Dermovate ointment and our coconut oil for lubrication. Any low impact exercise is good for you but I find a daily walk of at least 1 mile works for me. Hope you find the right regime for you,
Ok great! Thanx everyone.
Last year I had had my LS under control for months and was on a once a fortnight use of my steroid cream by then as it was really calmed down. I don't swim often and didn't really think about chemicals in the pool when I was on holiday. I went into the pool on the fourth day of my holiday for 10 mins only and had a shower straight after. By the next morning the flare was in full swing and I suffered the rest of my holiday. I had not thought to bring my steroid cream abroad with me
