May of last year I had a twisted hernia operation, a few days after returning home, I developed the most disgusting bitter taste in my mouth which I still have 15 months later. I now feel apart from the taste a burning sensation tongue & lips. I  have seen 4 different consultants in different fields, with no result. Been on so much medication. I am now feeling rather depressed as there is no change whatsoever. Just wish someone somewhere could give me an answer to cure it. I,m taking Ranintidine, Esmeprozole. I do also have a Hyatis Hernia. Any help or suggestions would be so much apreciated. Thank you

Hi Lucia,

With the Ranintidine, is this being prescribed to take twice a day? Normally, it is breakfast and bedtime. I used to be on these and I had nothing but problems, some people cannot take them, while others can. I suffered from really bad acid reflux on these.

The alternative I take is Lansoprazole which is one in the morning only, which cured the acid reflux problem I had.

With numerous Consultants I have seen over the years, I know how you feel - before I was diagnosed correctly, it took just over 2 years. Would you believe that doctors first thought I had been injecting illegal drugs in my arms!!! They were far from the truth and did not even know the name of my condition at the time because it was that rare. rolleyes

Have you raised the head of your bed yet. This will stop the night time silent reflux while your asleep. Do coconut oil pulling for your burning mouth. Drink alkaline water to neutralise the pepsin that gets embeded in your throat when you have reflux. Don't wear anything tight round your waist. Eat little and often. Avoid fatty food. Start using digestive enzymes with meals. This should help.

I use renetadine but only when I have a flare up. I just take one followed by a couple of dry cream crackers. When I was put on them by a specialist for gastritis in the osophagus I was gushing acid within a week. Your stomach needs acid to digest the food and kill bugs in the food. I found that taking ant-acids regular made my problems worse.

Thank you for your reply. I only have to take 1 Ranitidine in the morning.as I said I also take Esmeprozole in the morning, I was prescribed those as they are stronger lansoprazole. No-one just no-one can give me an answer. I know I have Acid reflux but apparently that is not what is causing my taste problem. So yours is just the acid reflux problem ? not the constant bitter taste.

Hi gallee, Thank you for your replies. Yes I have acid reflux, but medical people don't think that is causing my bitter taste problem. What is coconut oil pulling or is that a typo. With this taste I have no appetite, but do eat because I need too. I guess I could try alkaline water, would that be from the health shop?. Also digestive enzymes is that Activa and the like?

The bitter taste in my mouth was sorted by doing what I recommended you to do. Coconut oil has anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti biotic qualities. Oil pulling. The oil is set at room temp. Buy it in a jar. Place a tea spoon full in your mouth. It desolves almost immediately. Swish it round your gums and suck it through your teeth. Do this for a few minutes and then spit it out. Do this 3 times a day. It doesn't taste bad. I baught some alkalizing drops to alkaline my own bottled water. Digestive enzymes in tablet form from health food shop. Propping head of bed up 6 inches stops reflux whilst your sleeping.

Hi gallee, Thank you for info, will certainly try what you have suggested. Did you develop bad taste after an operation?. and how long did you have it for ?

I have hiatus hernia but I also sleep apnoea. I have to sleep on my side without a pillow for the sleep apnoea. This is bad for the HH and causes reflux. I,d had the bad taste for quite some time. When I raised the head of the bed it helped both conditions.  The alkaline water helped with the pepsin embeded in the osophagus and the coconut oil sorted the mouth. Plus when I clean my teeth I use a tongue scraper. Coconut oil has amazing health benefits. It is a saturated fat but the good kind. It is the perfect fuel for the brain and can reverse dementia. I told one lady who had burning mouth to try it and she said there was a massive improvement. Within one day. Google it's other benefits.

Thank you very much for all the info, hopefully tomorrow i will get the things you suggested. So desperate now I will try anything smile

gallee, just been looking at the cocnut oil, there are so many. Which would you recommend?

Thank you will check it out :0

Whilst everyone is being Kind & helpful about acid reflux. My worst problem is the bitter taste I'v had in my mouth for the last 15 months. This is what I deperately need to get rid of. It's so debilitating !

I'm not an expert but extra virgin coconut oil seems to be the one recommended. It's the one I use.

Hi gallee, I have got the coconut oil & digetive enzyme tabs today. The coconut oil is not quite what I thought. I expected it to be runny, but opening the jar is quite solid and looks like lard. Put a teaspoonful in my mouth but it didn't really dissolve.. But I will persevere with it and hope it helps. They didn't stock alkaline drops, so have orderd on line.

Yes it is set at room temp but normally a couple of chews and swish round the mouth and it's liquid. Another interesting experience with coconut oil. I'd had a fungal toe nail for about 2 years. Tried different meds nothing worked. I applied the coconut oil once. Completely gone. Best of luck.

Thank you, you have been very helpful. will let you know how I get on. Fingers crossed biggrin

Coconut oil in my mouth just makes me wretch, the taste is awful. So what I have done this lunchtime is spread it on some bread with ham in a sandwich. Don't know if it will have the same effect !

Sorry to hear that. Might be worth googling to see if anyone had added flavouring to it. It want do you any harm on bread and might work. I add a spoonful to my cup of tea. Just adds a flavour of coconut. I think. You can fry with it. You don't need to keep it in a fridge and has a very long shelf life.

Oh you put it in your tea, I thought you put in your mouth. Or do you do both ?
