Lump in throat

Hello everyone,

I've been suffering from reflux before and since having my gallbladder out. I feel so much better since the op but the thing I can't cope with is the constant feeling of a lump in my throat. I've convinced myself it's something sinister! But I also know it's one of the reflux symptoms. How others cope with this?

Hi

I've been suffering with the constant lump in the throat and over production of phlegm + constant throat clearing for over 2 years now with little relief.  No meds have helped but I do find chewing gum or DGL licqourice helps to take my mind of it as well as drinking lots of water. Also keeping busy, doing a little exercise like swimming or pilates seems to help me.

Hi christina1955,

Do you also  have this feeling of dryness inside your mouth and bitter taste whenever you have that sensation of a lump in you throat?

Hi Christina, I have the same feeling in my throat on the right side. Some times after a hard day of work and even talking to much I can start feeling pain, I had a scan of my throat and also went to see a specialist and he put a cámara down my throat and it all looks ok, the only thing they told me was that my tonsils looked irritated or inflamed,  I'm going to see a different doctor to talk about my acid reflux and learn more about stretta therapy.

Hi jguzman,

I'm also interested in stretta therapy - I emailed the Stretta centre last week, but have had no reply - please let me know how you get on.

Hi Christina, I have that sensation even on meds but I found that lifting the head of my bed and not eating for at least 2hrs before I go to bed really helped. I also thought the worst but it is a symptom and it does take some time to go away. I've had mris and scopes ( just had one today down my larynx) and though my throat is still sore I was told that it's not sinister so try not to worry too much. Reflux comes and goes and hopefully you'll have a really good patch coming up where you'll get yourself back to normal. There's lots of tops on here of things you can do yourself to help, it's worth giving them a go x

Sure, I will let you guys know what I find out.

Hi Clariebear,

no I don't have any dryness or bad taste just this constant lump feeling. I'm trying to be rational about it but I can't help worrying.

Well yesterday I went to see a doctor and talk about the stretta therapy, he asked me if I had heart burn, no I don't,  I told him that I fill something in my right side of the throat.  He said if I only feel it on the right side it's not normal, he looked at the results of the mri and the notes from the ear and throat specialist and said there was nothing concerning,  he said he would like to do other test first, there is no point doing the stretta procedure if acid reflux is not what is causing this symptom. Do you guys have more symptoms?

HI jguzman,

Sometimes I have a lump in my throat,  other times I have a sore throat, other times a  tickly throat,  I often have a dry  throat and this makes talking very difficult. Sometimes I have problems swallowing.

Not really. I get chest pain but I have a hiatus hernia, I kind of get a bitter taste before a throat flare up but that's about all. Mines right sided too and I've been down the mri route. I did have a gastroscopy which showed oesophagitis so then they went from " acid couldn't reach that far" to " oh definitely lpr, here's some ppis". I've seen another ENT since and he says that acid can get anywhere so go figure. Thing is now I have to convince the GI doc that I need surgery. It's madness as we are the people dealing with this. I have Barretts oesophagus and the GI doc is still trying to tell me it's a functional disorder ( ie all in my head). My inflamed throat is a fact, not in my imagination, grrrr!

Lpr has only been recognised as a condition since 2000 so maybe it takes these dinosaurs a while to catch up!

I have that, Claire. It's awfulsad I'm having a bad flare at the moment and that's exactly the sequence.

Is he putting you forward for ph testing? Insist on ph impedance as that detects all reflux not just acid. It may be the cause of your problems is non acid reflux in which case stretta will still help as it's still coming up from your stomach.

Yes that is the next exam to check the ph, and they also told me my tonsils are inflamed.

Have you checked hoarseness and see if maybe some of those symptoms are what you have.

Try and get ph impedance testing.  Ph testing only tests for acid, ph impedance tests for everything. It's far more accurate.  My hospital only has two impedance boxes so have to know in advance. Are you UK based?

At the moment I only get hoarse when I sing.

I'm in Houston Texas.

I have noticed that when I have to do a lot of talking loud so people can hear me,  I get pain in my throat
