Malaise and loss of appetite four weeks post-op

I am 4 weeks post cholecystectomy, with bouts of malaise that have been debilitating. I can only describe the bouts as feeling like I have suddenly come down with the most horrific flu and will pass out if I don’t lay down immediately. I get these bouts at least once a day, usually at night. At night, I have more feelings of pressure and burning pain under both sides of the ribcage. Appetite is poor. My bloodwork is normal aside from elevated eosinophils, which the doctor doesn’t seem concerned about. Had a follow up ultrasound which came back normal. Am at my wits end as I am so limited where I can go or what I can do as the bouts hit me if I even try to go to the store for a brief moment. I can’t seem to eat much either before feeling nauseous. Have any of you experienced this? If so, did it eventually pass? I am getting depressed from never being able to leave my house. I will get an h pylori test tomorrow but have a feeling it will be negative. Think it may be gastritis but does that cause flu like malaise? Thanks so much in advance.

Hi,
I’m four weeks posy op. I’m getting pressure feeling across back/between shoulder blades and bitter taste in mouth which is getting slightly better. I’m hoping this will improve as the body recovers. I was getting bad symptoms of bile reflux and burning sensation at night but this has decreased. The flu type feeling I haven’t had. Many people say it takes the body 3 to even 6 months to adjust, hopefully they are right. Good luck.

Hi there i am 6 and a half post op ! sounds like me some days i just have to go to bed feeling nauseas and completely void of energy , my appetite is good then bad have to force myself to eat ,Saw the surgeon last week he thinks now i may have a stomach ulcer who knows he didnt do anything else but now have to wait for a scope into stomach not looking forward to that .Its seems some people take longer than others i put mine down to my age being 70 today nit a good day and i have to go to the vets too i am miserable ! hope you feel better very soon nit nice is it .

Hi Joanne. I’m four weeks post op too. I have good days and bad days but I can tell that progressively I’m getting better.
I still get very tired but not every day. I still have pain, but it’s much less than in the beginning.
The doctor says it’s nothing to do with age (I’m 62) but that some people just take longer than others to recover from this surgery.
During my third week I caught flu which I’m still battling to get rid of after 10 days. I think our immune systems must be weakened by what we’ve been through.
I do whatever I feel necessary to look after myself which includes rest, gentle exercises, healthy food, vitamins, probiotics. But I do get very tired which I find frustrating and I can’t eat alot in one meal or I have digestive problems, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
Doctor says to eat six small meals a say which I find helps.
Just listen to your body and rest when you need to. I have read of people who are still trying to recover even six months down the line, so we maybe have a way to go still.

HI THERE ! sounds like we are all different but am 70 yrs old and i do think its because of my age and not eating much been causing my tiredness and lost loads of weight and at my age not good i am very underweight now lost about 14k .I still get pain in my right shoulder blade and in the gall bladder erea too iam 7 weeks post op ! some days feel very nauseas i have tablets for that I have not had much loose motions mainly constipated have to take lactoluse never been like this ever ! i have ibs ! and fibromaligia .I AM a constant worry to my family because been ill for ages now ! Firstly wrongly diagnosed first thought i was a drinker because my liver count off the roof asked me if i had been to any third world countrys too ! it took them 6 months to get the right diagnosis by then been in hospital about 4 times calling out an ambulance the pain was so intense thought i was having a heart attack !!! in the end had stone removed from my bile duct that was the intense pain so firstly had a ERCP ! THEN a MRCP get stone out so been pretty horrendous since early 2018 , i have lost faith in the NHS and i find that rather frightening you have to be your own advocate make sure they are even giving you the right drugs or none at all a complete joke .I WAS SICK all night first eve i was in the next day the surgeon said i could go home i refused to go telling him i had been sick all night he went then a nurse came in and out up a drip it was obvious the night staff had not documented this the second day i thought get me out of here !!! at least i will not catch any thing and i would get some rest at home hope all you lovely people get well soon .

I just found out what is wrong with me! I have h pylori, which has a higher instance post gallbladder surgery due to the PH levels in the stomach after surgery and laying in the supine position while healing. Do you believe that? I am now on a course of strong antibiotics to hopefully rid me of the nasty bugs. I had to request the test myself, as these stupid doctors had no idea and just kept telling me I was just taking longer to recover. Well, I was just getting worse and worse. So, if you feel like sh** like I did, it is worth it to ask for the test to rule it out. My symptoms were bloating that worsened as the day went on, burning pain under both sides of the ribcage, bouts of debilitating malaise, headaches. ringing in the ears, no appetite whatsoever, and nausea. I hope you all feel better as soon as possible!
