I am eight weeks post op from my tkn and my pt has referred me back to Surgeon for manipulation next week as I still can't straighten my knee. I am at-12 for straightening and 110 at bending. I go to pt three times a week, pool and gym, exercise, ice and elevate and it won't straighten. I am very nervous about manipulation as all reports and info I can find seems very bad and poor results for straightening the leg. Has anyone had this. I don't know what do do..
You're doing much better than a lot of people. You don't need a manipulation if you can bend more than 90 degrees. I wouldn't let them do it because when they did mine I couldn't walk for three days. You are fine. Therapists try to push you to tje extreme. The doctor is going to put you to sleep and crank your knee. It is gojng swell up like a watermelon and you're going to be worse than you are now. You're in control of your rehab and if you don't want the manipulation don't get it. Im 8wks post op and I am only at 85 degrees and my Therapist is happy with my results. I told my pt at the start I had a low pain tolerance and he has respected it since. TKR is a brutal procedure and it takes time to heal. You're doing everything expected of you and more tell that pt where they can get off and ask your doctor to give you some one else.
I had a manipulation and it was the best thing. Do it.
Was yours for extension also. What degrees were you at prior to manipulation
Do you know if it is normal not to be able to straighten your leg
..
I keep hearing about this manipulation/ they do it at the end of your surgery/I had both knees replaced/June/Sept 2014/ they fractured my left knee cap / 2nd surgery/ doing manipulation / couldn't start pt for ROM for 6 weeks/ if the Manipulation was really necessary ok / I think your pt is over reacting 110 is not bad / 120 was my goal which I EVENTUALLY got to but it took a lot more than 8 weeks / I'd be more concerned about the. -12 / now I'm NOT a doctor or physical therapist but you have the right to question what they are doing / it's your knee. I heard one doctor say he had never done a manipulation in hundreds of knee replacements / did not believe in it / by the way my knees are good/ most recently had RTHR 10 weeks ago/ my knees have lost some ROM due to inactivity during this hip replacement/ you have to maintain any gains you make in physical therapy/ this is a lifelong obligation to exercise/ anyone tell you that?
Well there's another perspective/ Jen is the first I've heard say manipulation was a good thing/ do your research/ good luck
Hi, I agree I could not do better than you until about 12 week's or so. I am almost 6 months post op now.
No need for manipulation.
Take care,
Alan
