I had a THR of my right hip 5 weeks ago. I can honestly say I had no real pain after the operation, just sore where all the muscles had been cut and a bit of swelling around the knee. This wasn't a surprise and it's quite a brutal operation and all the trauma goes straight down the femur to your knee. I ditched my walking sticks at 2 weeks and could walk unaided for 1.5 miles the next week. I drove my car for the first time this morning. Only problem was getting in and out with the steering wheel/column in the way. (I'm short and small and the car is large and high.) Also did 10 minutes each of cross trainer, treadmill and exercise bike at the gyn today for the first time. I am convinced I am doing so well because I have religiously done all the exercises I was given a few times every day and am being very careful not to over bend etc. I hope this will make those waiting for the op feel more confident. All my pain has completely gone and it's the best thing I ever did. Go for it! You will always read negative comments on a forum, such as this and I wanted to put on a really positive one. Good luck everyone!
Thank you for your positive comment but, believe me, those of us who put negative comments have NOT had such a successful outcome from our THR. I am delighted to hear that yours was so successful and only wish I could have been so lucky but mine, like many others, was not.
Thanks Marion- that does reassure me.
May I ask you who your surgeon was please?
As you say, we mostly hear horror stories, as they are the ones needing help, but it's always good to hear a positive story - well done on your recovery.
Thank you for your positive comments, you are right there are a lot of complaints on this forum. I too am on the fence about the operation needing a thr on the right hip. I work in healthcare and do not want to be off work for 3 months!
Hi Michael. My surgeon was Philip Kerr at Pinehill Hospital, Hitchin. He also operates at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. If you Google him he's the top guy in UK having done more hips than anyone else in a 12 month period. He did 96, the next guy did 50 something. Also he has had the operation himself.
I am 66 so retired but I'm sure I could cope with working in less than another 6 weeks. You are very tired after the op for thr first couple of weeks. I am slim and very fit which was a help too.
I am sorry Jayive. I hope things improve for you soon.
Ah very useful- thank you so much.
i have a fabulous surgeon here in Malta, but I am thinking about having a second opinion as I was hoping to get away with a resurfacing hip, like the Birmingham hip, although I know they don’t that on females, but there is a professor Justin Cobb, who is using the equivalent for women.
mind you I am not hopeful as my surgeon says in need the whole flippin thing!!!
I think mine beat him! He did 159 plus 20 hip revisions. Mind you I think he is a bit of a workaholic with no bedside manner, but an excellent surgeon.
