Hi, it's me again, your local anxious 16 year old dork. I have a question. How bad of an eye injury would it take to cause a retinal detachment? Because I have multiple times accidentally jabbed myself in the corner of my eye with my knuckle while rubbing my eye, not extremely hard but with some force.
I've also been having some concerning symptoms in my right eye. I have floaters in that eye I hadn't noticed up until recently (or at least I think I do). Not a whole ton of them like they're obscuring my vision, but I do notice them when I'm looking up at the bright sky or something.
I also have noticed, and this is more concerning, that my vision out of that eye seems to be noticeably duller than out of my left. I read somewhere that it can be caused by looking at a screen with one eye closed, and I do think I sometimes look at my computer screen at night while I'm laying in bed with one eye covered by my pillow, but would that be enough to cause it to be that way all day? Because it seems like that doesn't stop.
I also sometimes worry I'm seeing light flashes in the corner of my eyes. I don't know whether sometimes I'm just catching the glare on something out of the corner of my eye (because I HAVE had that happen sometimes) or what, but it does concern me.
Anyway, I could use any advice you have.
(ps: i commented on someone else's post worrying about retinal detachment lol. seems like that's another common worry with health anxiety. the more you know)
Have you talked to your parents about your fears? Maybe see your family doctor with your Mum?
Nnnope. I don’t really like bringing stuff like this up to them anymore unless I’m totally sure there’s actually something wrong with me and it’s not just my anxiety being stupid, which I’m not at all sure about in this case. Too much other stuff going on in our life to constantly bother them with me and my health anxiety making me think I have this serious health problem and that serious health problem.
it would take some serious eye rubbing to cause your eye to become deatched. everything i see you have described can be normal although i would recommend to see a eye doctor just for his opinion and a piece of mind. i see floaters all the time and trust me i have rubbed my eyes hard 1,000 times. i can still see fine. health anxiety can suck. heck i think I am dying constantly when really it is all anxiety… best of luck to you
Hi,I doubt you have a retinal problem. Don’t read in a totally dark room. I’m talking on a lit phone screen or tablet, always have some light on. I used to do that and it would affect my vision for awhile. I believe you can find it on the internet. Ive got floaters and something called PVD which is common when you get older, but can happen when your younger also. Easy to find info on the net about it. If the flashes keep happening might want to go have it checked by an optomotrist or opthomologist. I’m pretty sure you are fine though .Try not to worry. You are not a dork.
Thanks! I’ve seen about the PVD thing, I don’t think I have that but I guess it could be possible. I also read in a couple of places that anxiety or lack of sleep can cause eye flashes sometimes, both of which probably apply to me, Lol. That’s the thing I’m least sure about whether I actually have or not though. I do know I have floaters and there’s no doubt about the one eye seeing duller than the other thing.
I’m thinking I probably don’t have anything seriously wrong because everything I’ve read says that by this point I’d probably be having more serious symptoms (read: blind spots in my eyes) if I had a detatched retina, so I think I’m fine?? Just health anxiety getting to me again, Lol.
Thank you so much though!! (also, who says I’m not proud of being a dork? lol)
Thanks! That’s the only thing I could think of that could cause me to have that problem because I haven’t had any other eye injuries (as far as I remember) and I don’t have any other eye diseases or shortsightedness or anything (I’m pretty sure my eyes are dry though from staring at a computer screen, R.I.P).
I’ve pretty much decided I’m just being paranoid again, Lol. Just hope something else doesn’t start happening to make me start worrying about it again.
Health anxiety DOES suck. Honestly it’s gotten so bad in the past about other things that I couldn’t focus on doing anything else because I was worrying so bad. Thank you, and best of luck to you too!!
Oof, well I HAVE started worrying about this again. Still no blind spots or anything but I keep worrying I’m seeing flashes in the corner of my eye, and the floaters are concerning me more now because I definitely don’t have them in the other eye and I hadn’t noticed them until somewhere around 2 weeks ago, probably a little less than that.
My eye on that side is irritated from what’s probably allergies or dry eye or something like that. They both kind of are but that one is worse. My eyelid seems to want to stick together sometimes. I don’t know if that popping open could be causing what look like flashes to me.
The thing is, they’re kinda sorta subtle-ish? Like they’re not really really bright where I KNOW for a fact that it’s a light flash but they’re definitely noticeable. But, I feel like I’ve been noticing things that look like light flashes for quite some time and haven’t had anymore serious problems yet?? But I don’t know. If I didn’t have the floaters too I wouldn’t be as worried.
I also remembered something else that concerns me. Sometime somewhat recently (as in, this year. i can’t remember when exactly) I walked into a tree limb and got kinda poked in the eye. The eye felt irritated afterwards but nothing else came of it. Now I’m worrying that could have caused a retinal detachment or a tear that could progress into one. I don’t remember when that happened in relation to any other concerning symptoms starting.
It’s been 9 days since I posted this, and longer since I started having symptoms. If I had a retinal detachment, it would certainly be worse by now right?? Is it possible for me to have no other symptoms but the ones I described after at least 11 or so days? Maybe longer depending on whether the “flashes” I’m seeing now are the same as the ones I’ve been maybe seeing for what’s probably been months now?
If I had a tear would it have progressed by now? I don’t know, I’m having trouble finding information on the specifics when I’m trying to google stuff. I’m just kind of getting really worked up and anxious and it’s making me not able to do anything else. I would appreciate more advice.
Signed, Color.
