In my State, in USA, it is legal to use medical marijuana and recreactional marijuana. My surgeon knows of this. No one said for me to quit, but i felt it best for my anestesiologist to monitor my oxygen levels ; I have shallow lung compasity.
At my last surgery (weight loss surgery) my oxygen levels would drop below 95 and an alarm would go off and keep me awake.
I'm trying to avoid that, thinking that perhaps this will help.
Anyone have simular experience?
Please no nay sayers regarding my medical marijuana need to respond. i'm not looking for a lecture. Just someone that is familiar with this.
Thank you.
hi rouge warrior
on the initial paperwork given to me by the hospital it said that people who smoke it's recommend that 3 months or so they should give up smoking. something to do with oxygen level in the blood try your best to give it up love.
All the very best.
Hi there, Are you smoking it or ingesting it? That could make the difference. Also, it does say in my paper work that marijuana could cause the medicine given to you to have a different affect on you. (did i say that right?) Anyway, i would speak to your surgeon. When is your surgery? I know of someone who smoked marijuana (recreational) and told her doctor and they delayed her surgery by a month. So, I would definately speak with your surgeon. Did you go for pre-op yet? Are you using the breathing device to help your lungs? Ginny USA
I'm not over weight. But had a sleep study and my 02 webby down to low 60 saturation.so I'm on c pap each night.
It was hard to wear and accept.I have a finger oxcimiter to measure oxygen saturation.so I thought I try going without the c pap for one night.so I woke up during the night and oxygen was down 66 saturation.soi put the c pap back on.
Have u had a sleep study? For me I had no ideai had sleep apnea.
Thank you all for your responses.
I called my surgeons office and spoke with his nurse and was told to stop 5 days pre-op, because of the sedative effects of the marijuana, nothing else. I don't smoke cigs, but if i had, they require to to stop 3 months Pre-Op. Having something to do with the nicotine.
I go for a follow up sleep study this Sunday night. I was on a CPAP when i weighed over 100 lbs. than i do now. Since losing the weight i havn't needed it. But will for sure see where my oxygen levels are before surgery March 10th.
I go to my Pre Op classes Monday.
Thank you again everyone for your input.
Very appreciated, Sherri
Marihuana , I believe, has somewhat of a sedative effect and of course they always want you to quit smoking for a period pre-op. Other than that no problems I am aware of. Wish my state would legalize it again; especially for medical use. Just another useless prohibition.
