I am male, 62 years old. Been depressed for many years. On Mirtazapine and Sertraline. Still can't sleep and very low all the time. Any suggestions please?
I always found that sertraline made me unable to sleep!
If you take it on the night try taking it in the day? If that doesn't work or you already take it in the day, why don't you try some kalms sleeping tablets they work for anxiety along with sleeping issues, I feel like your lack of sleep might actually be making the depression stay, because we need to sleep refresh our minds and you're not doing that
Are you single? If so why not try a dating site, they aren't just great for relationships they are great for friendships to keep your mind busy, also get yourself a pet I can be on my worst days and the second my cat or dog walk up to me I smile again
I am same age group. Cant shake this depression. Want to live a normal life. On mirtazapine ddr wants to add another med, have tried this several times and always worse.cbt wasted time. Agitated when waking are you. Had zipoclone for sleep but its habit forming so stopped. Now sleep not so good. Makes day so long. Hoping dr will give me something else.
Hi. I've had both these meds but not at the same time. Neither did anything at all to help my depression, however when I got to the top dose of Mirtazapine I found it knocked me out.
It wasn't a refreshing sleep, in fact it was very unpleasant with terrbile dreams, but not everyone is the same. A lot of people (though not all) seem to find high doses near the top of the prescribing limit of Mirtazapine does help getting to some state of sleep. It could be worth trying an increase if you are able/not already at the max dose.
Hope you find some relief, I am yet to find mine..
Thats interesting, my dr has tried to increase the mirtaz but i just got worse so tapered down. Treatments all dont work so far. Now wants to use atypical antipsychotic as augmentaion. Have you any experience of this? Im looking for any advice please, anyone?
Hi Neville - sorry to read of your situation. I am wondering how long you have been on meds? Have you have tried any other meds? Perhaps this combination is not beneficial for you. There are so many meds for depression/anxiety and no one-size-fits-all with them. Sometimes it takes a tweak of the dose or type of meds to make a difference.Tell your docor what is happening and if they dismiss you, get another doc.
Hi Ann. I have paranoid schizophrenia (which also causes anxiety, depression, insomina, OCD, disordered eating.. I could go on) so have tried many atypical antipsychotics, SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics.. None of them have particularly helped my schizophrenia, which is why I've tried so many. I also never found them to be of any real help for my depression. But everyone is different so it could be worth a try. Please just be aware that there can be terrible side effects of antipsychotics, both atypical and first generation, so please do your research first. There's a lot of info on the mental health forums to. Best of luck!
