Hi everyone ,had new right hip 3 weeks ago, was up and about early in hospital so they let me home early, seem to be getting on rididulously well, can walk with no crutches when i want not sure haw long for though, but still have trouble sleeping on my back, waking every couple hours , have to get up and walk a bit before i can get back to sleep. When do you start to cut down medication, worried that if i start cutting it down the pain will return and i won't be able to do what i'm doing now, still on the same meds i left hospital with, the meds are becoming more of a crutch than the crutches.
Hi Bodger, well done you ! You seem to be doing fabulous, which is bound to make you feel much better. The original pain should not return as you have a new hip. Try cutting down daytime meds very gradually but at only three weeks post op I would leave night meds as they are for the next couple of weeks then gradually decrease them also. I hope things keep going so well for you. You'll soon feel like a new person ( or at least an improved version of the old one !!!!) good luck. Maggie
Well done......One caution ...I was told when i left the hospital to "keep on top of the pain....not to play catch up with it" In other words take your meds regularly.
I didnt have any night ones So it was paracetamol and naproxen and that was it.
I would say leave it until you have your 6 week appointment and then try cutting down one dose of something LOL in a day, see how you feel, keep on {eg I take 4 lots of paracetamol a day} Cut down one lot and if I feel OK, stay at that doesage for quite a while.
You'll soon know whether you need to go back to them or not....your body will tell you. Depends on what you are taking as well. If its a morphine based one cut down with the help of your GP
Thanks maggiemac and eileen64,not on strong meds paracetemolx2 codenex2 4x a day with ibuprofen 3 times asprin for blood and a single dose of something so i don't get stomach problems from the meds, at night it's just codene and paracetemol.I've got appioment with the surgeon on 6 weeks so will leave till then see what he says.thanks for your quick reply, going so well worried something is bound to go wrong, shouldn't be so glass half empty, but spent time before surgery expecting some problems now they haven't happened can't get used to the idea .
If you don't have pain, then don't take pain meds.....
I live with bodywide and OA and Fibro and in chronic mild to mid pain all day....so I take Ibuprofen and wouldn't be without DGL (dgylcerrized licorice) for stomach protection....it is over the counter supplement.
And I deal with nerve damage from Anterior replacement in 2010....
I'm in US and don't know if one can find DGL in your country.
I ended up a stomach ulcer from pharma drug in 80's so take care of my stomach as I best know how....
I agree with Joy. Don't take anything you don't need. I came home with just ibuprofen. Night pain was the worst part but it does get better. I found it was better when I got up and walked a little as well. I was told I could sleep on my side from the start as long as I used pillows. I just switched positions every couple of hours. I still find that I do that at 3 months post op.
