Hi, I was wondering if anyone has found effective medications or treatments for ibs alternating type (having both constipation and diarrhea on and off) besides the fodmap diet. Thanks in advance!
I take Mebeverine for the bowel spasms I get with my IBS. I didn't think it helped, until I stopped taking them a few weeks ago to see if I could come off them as I've been taking them for roughly two years now. However a few days after stopping them I had to call for an ambulance as I had such horrendous pains in my stomach and bowels, I thought something serious was really happening inside me like appendicitis. It ended up being a bowel spasm, which I've read can give very severe pain. Since going back on them I've not had the pains since.
Imodium works well for me. I have IBS C but I have also had IBS A on and off due to stress. Mebeverine made me 50% worse; many people have trouble with it because it is a stomach irritant. I started having indigestion within seconds of swallowing the first tablet and it got rapidly worse. I tried them twice for four days and felt so ill,I threw them out. Buscopan and Nurofen help with the pain.
You just have to treat each symptom separately. Imodium for diarrhoea, buscopan for cramps, laxatives as needed for constipation.
FODMAP won't stop diarrhoea or constipation but can help with bloating and gas.
Some people find fibre supplements helpful to regulate between d and c
Thanks for the replies! My doctor prescribed me viberzi in the past and I was uncomfortable taking medicine daily specifically for diarrhea when I might only have few (or less) flare ups of diarrhea each month. This has made treating both symptoms difficult for me since I never know which one will come about.
