Melatonin for Silent Acid Reflux

Having tried some other so called natural cures and not wanting to waste money again I would be grateful if anyone has tried anything to do with melatoni for silent acid reflux and what their views are. I know it is contained in things like olive oil but cannot find anywhere that tells me how much olive oil you would need to take to have an effect. Am not keen on getting the melatonin capsules unless essential as they can cause nausea, headaches etc where olive oil will not cause any side effects.

Interesting - i only use olive oil and coconut oil. The problem if you had to use a lot of olive oil would be that fats take longer to digest so stay in the stomach for longer, and cause more acid production to digest them. Swings and roundabouts. I'll be interested in what others say. Thanks for raising this. Best smile

Thanks for reply... presumably acid is indiciative of your problem? No? LOL. I always feel better after drinking raw olive oil and always use it for cooking.

I eat olive oil every day but in moderation. It did not help my LPR but the melatonin tablests did.  I agree if you ate enough olive oil to help with LPR, you likely would be getting too much fat in your diet which is contraindicated with LPR.

I have tried it all and have had success in controlling LPR with taking a melatonin tablet every night two hours before bed along with:

1) lowish fat diet

2)  low acid foods (red sauces very bad!)

3) small meals

4) no late night eating

5) sipping alkaline water pH 8.88, especially if I feel reflux.

I hope this helps.

Susa

Hi Susan. Please tellme if you can...

How much olive oil would one need to drink to get an effect? How do you get your ph 8.88 water?

Which melatonin tablet do you take?

Do you know what is causing your reflux problem?

If it is because of the spchinter does the water and

olive oil etc help or is repairing the valve necessary?

Hi Carmel,  I'll reply to your questions:

How much olive oil would one need to drink to get an effect? Answer:  I don't know, but I can say I put it on my salads, my soups even in oatmeal, but it wasn't enough--the tablets are what helped.

How do you get your ph 8.88 water? Answer:   I buy Iceland water from Iceland (LOL).

Which melatonin tablet do you take? Answer:  I use 5 mg Natrol though I don't know if it makes any difference what brand you use. It is cheap.

Do you know what is causing your reflux problem? Answer:  I don't know what caused it.  It just started a couple of years ago.  Very annoying!

If it is because of the spchinter does the water and

olive oil etc help or is repairing the valve necessary?  Answer:  The water is to destroy the pepsin that is in the reflux.  The pepsin is what causes the inflammation in the throat and the inflammation causes the mucus. The melatonin is supposed to help the sphincter.  I didn't realise this but melatonin is produced in the gut and if you don't have enough melatonin, the sphincters can weaken.

I had no idea melatonin is produced in the gut. Do you have a link to more information about melatonin and the sphincter Susan?

I have a hiatus hernia so dont suppose that melatonin would help that. Also Barretts and LPR, and taking ppis for these. Always looking for ways to cut down on the ppis but concerned to do so owing to the Barretts.

Thanks so much for that, very helpful. Do appreciate it. Will have to rethink my strategy. When you say water from Iceland you mean the freezer centre? LOL>

My symptoms are a cough when I wake up which continues but lessens through the day. Then my headaches start and are there all the time, get pressure and pain in ears and a feeling they are full up. Some post nasal drip and throat clearing a lot. Maybe we had somethign happen to us that removed the melatonin and that damaged the cat flap there - as I call it.

Melatonin levels go down as we age.  I guess more in some of us.

Yes I read something about that. But mine suddenly just went overnight.

Hi Susan. I just signed up today so I can ask you a couple of questions re melatonin. Firstly I hope you are feeling well. I have LPR. I began 2 mg Melantonin along with a tiny dose of rivatrol which I have been on for years. I sleep really well and when I wake up my throat and voice are comfortable. However after my first meal the pain returns . I follow the alkaline protocol rinses after meals and this helps deactivate the pepsin

My question to you is are you still on the 5 mg melatonin ? Do you feel better with reflux and LPR?

Thank you for your advice. It's greatly appreciated. Marla
