Melatonin

It may be a good idea to consider melatonin before PPI's or surgery as there's research showing that it can help or even cure gut problems, including lowering stomach acid and strengthening the esophageal sphincter. A naturopath put me onto it and it really helped. Check out the research and anecdotal evidence yourself. Just google esophageal sphincter-melatonin, and acid reflux-melatonin. It's worth a go. No side effects as far as I can tell, except being a little drowsy first thing in the morning for a few days.

Thanks for this Mick! I did have good experience with melatonin, but took it just for my insomnia issue... did not connect it with the stomach.  Now it explains why I had less stomach issues...

Thanks for this info on Melatonin. How do you buy this , though I mean what is the presentation is it tablet or capsules?

I get mine online. It's really cheap and you can buy small amounts or larger. I got the 240 tablet bottle. I have one at bed time which I take more as a preventative these days, as I remember how bad it can get. My Naturopath recommended the 3 mg tablet but some of the research I've read recommends 6 mg. 3 mg seems to work for me.

Luck.

Yeah I have read Melatonin

might help some GI problems.

However I have tried Melatonin

on 3 separate occasions for sleep

and got a terrible migraine for 2 days

every time I tried it. It never helped me sleep.

You could perhaps try different brands and closely monitor.

I asked my GP about it and he did not have much faith in it for sleep problems. He is also a doctor for sports teams and has prescribed it for groups coming back from OZ and South America and did not have good reports back on it from them. He had not heard of it for stomach acid one of my other problems.

He did give me a prescription for some so I will see how it goes.

A lot of side effects are listed and in combination with many drugs it can have an enhanced effect:

Side-effects less commonly abdominal pain, dyspepsia, dry mouth, mouth ulceration, nausea, weight gain, hypertension, chest pain, malaise, dizziness, restlessness, nervousness, irritability, anxiety, headache, abnormal dreams, proteinuria, glycosuria, pruritus, rash, dry skin; rarely thirst, flatulence, halitosis, salivation, vomiting, gastritis, hypertriglyceridaemia, angina, palpitation, syncope, hot flushes, aggression, impaired memory, restless legs syndrome, paraesthesia, mood changes, priapism, increased libido, prostatitis, polyuria, haematuria, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, electrolyte disturbances, muscle spasm, arthritis, lacrimation, visual disturbances, nail disorder; also reported galactorrhoea, mouth and tongue oedema.

You don't need a prescription for Melatonin you can buy it over the counter. Thanks

Not in the UK.

RU Kidding. Melatonin has been

OTC in the USA for years. I bet u could get it on Amazon. I wonder

why u have to have a script. I have

seen it in the Dollar Stores and 99cent Stores. I can see why u might

need a script that stuff made me feel

weird and the migraines lasted

until it got out of my system.

Sure we can buy it on eBay and Amazon from abroad. Here it is regarded as a drug for short term use, no more than 13 weeks so has to be prescribed. The cost to the NHS is about 13 pounds for 30 capsules. My GP gave me a prescription for 100.

Looking at the other drugs including the BP meds that I take that they are contra indicated with has made me hestiant as they can put up BP.

How many mg is the dosage. of your prescription.I just looked on amazon I saw 240 tablets that are 3mg pills for 7 dollars. 1 US Dollar is Currently 0.64 British Pounds. U mite save a little money on Amazon.

They are 2 mg. As a Senior I get my prescriptions free.

You never know what you get on line. Probably made in China. The Amazon ones have nine pounds postage added for shipping to the UK

Melatonin reduces blood pressure. It's dirt cheap online.

Cheers.

LOL Derek everybody wants u to order Melatonin online. LOL

It doesn't surprise me that your doctor doesn't know about melatonin as a treatment for gut problems. If you've read these forums for awhile, then you already know way more than most doctors. The specialist I saw was writing down things about reflux that I was telling her, including about melatonin. Didn't inspire confidence and in the end I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The best advice I got was from a local Naturapath, who btw, put me onto melatonin. She advised taking 3mg a night for a couple of months. There's a lot of research out there to do with melaton and gut problems and I'd expect a competent GP or specialist to be up with the newer research, but I suspect the only research they will do is reading the latest glossy drug company pamphlets. Because melatonin is produced in the body, It can't be patented, and so there's no money in for big pharma, and at the end of the day, IMO, doctors for the most part are just glorified drug dealers for big pharma.

Luck

OK YOU MELATONIN MEN

WHAT IS IT THAt MELATONIN

DOES THAT HELPS THE GUT.

WHAT SYMPTOMS DOES IT RELIEVE. I ALWAYS THOUGHT

IT WAS SUPPOSE TO HELP U SLEEP. I TRIED iT 3 TIMES IN THe

PASt AND GOT TERRIBLE MIGRAINES FOR DAYS. The pain in my head would certainly help me forget about my hi issues because the migraines were pretty bad, What does it do for GI PROBLEMS, THANKS

I saw an ad on amazon for 240 pills of 3 mg of melatonin it was 7.50 American Dollars. 1 American dollar

is 0.64 British Pound. Amazon offers free shipping if u spend 35 bucks. The item has to say available for free shipping. I have done this and gotten products from china and Singapore

as part of the free shipping even if it is coming to the USA. Just buy 35 dollars worth if melatonin as long as it says available for free shipping next to the product So that would be 4.8 pounds for 240 pills plus if u can order a 35 dollar supply. I know i mite be leery if it is being mailed buy china but u mite find some from vendors in the USA or Canada.

I was told by one guy on here he pays a dollar a pound a pill via prescription. What does this drug do for the gut it does give migraines thanks

I would be concerned about taking melatonin if u need a medication for

blood pressure. U need a anti-hypertensives for high blood pressure. Your body may react negatively to a strange med other

them a true anti hypertensive.

Melatonin is made in the pineal gland, intestinal tract, stomach, small intestine, colon, and the esophagus. Our gut is a living, vibrant, seething eco system that is just now beginning to be explored. Everyone's is different, depending on where you live, eat, what toxins you've came in contact with, what meds you've taken throughout your life. All the billions of little critters living there are akin to dark matter. It's emerging that they just about effect everything we do, our moods, energy levels, our health and well-being, etc. Nobody remotely understands what is happening in there but new research is slowly starting to take baby steps.

Melatonin effects many parts of the body, but regarding the gut, it lowers stomach acid and is thought to strengthen the esophageal sphincter. I can't post links, so google melatonin- acid reflux, and or, melatonin - esophageal sphincter. There's lots of research being done.

I don't know why it gives you head-aches. It's thought to be safe but everyone is different. Could it be that it's reacting with other meds you are taking, or the dose is too high?

I get mine from a reputable online seller of medicinal herbs.

Cheers
