Messed up ankle badly

Hey guys! So I was playing football on saturday night and completely turned my ankle while I was about to catch the ball. The foot completely turned sideways and was stuck at a 45 degree angle; the ball came out of the socket essentially. Luckily, one of my friends, who is almost a doctor (anesthesiology resident), quickly came and realigned my foot (popped it back in) while i was in agony. I went straight to the ER and there was no fracture. I was unable to put ANY weight on the foot, but was really glad that i didn't break a bone.

Yesterday I went to an orthopedic surgeon who examined the ankle told me i need an MRI asap, didn't tell me much about my ankle (spent like 3 minutes with me), and said after the MRI we'll talk. He said he was concerned about chondral defects. I got the MRI done today and have the CD with me. If anyone can read MRIs, please let me know! I will post the images.

I have really bad pain on both sides of the ankle, bruising (blue discoloration on both sides), can't walk, (cant bear ANY weight) and it's swollen up like i've never seen before. Any ideas on what happened to my ankle? I won't find out until thursday. Thanks!

Hi sounds like  you have  got a grade 3 sprain which is either really stretched ligaments or you have ruptured them this can cause all the symptoms you have got on your ankle the MRI will be able to tell you what ligament damage you have done and the orthopedic surgeon will advise on what to do keep it raised and ice it i would not put any weight on it only know this as i have experianced the same thing ended up having reconstruction of my ligaments because i ruptured all 3 of them in my ankle after i fell over last year i am now fully recovered best thing i did good luck with everything hope you get it sorted

Hey Alestor,

If nothing is broken I think you should be good in the medium term.

Probably some trouble in 30 years but good till then.

My foot was at 90deg outwards.  I pulled it back to central but had crushed fibulla and snapped end off tibia.

I never played squash again, but had no other probs for 25 years, then the cartilage wore away and the pain set in.

Now have a TAR and 8 weeks post op with all going well.

Keep off yr foot. Take it very easy and do all yr told.

It's a slow proccess, this healing business.

Good luck....Paul (UK)

Hi, I done the same playing football-soccer years ago, my ankle came out of socket. I never kicked a ball for 8 months, then after that and until now, I'm still getting trouble, I played football yesterday and my ankle has swollen up again. It's a terrible injury to get, I'd rather have snapped my ankle than have this injury. When you ankle comes from its socket! The tendons and liggiments will be damaged and will continue to give you trouble, I ain't played football in over a year and this swelling up will go away now as it seems to loosen everything up in my ankle. I will be able to go back next week and play football without it swelling up this much but it's always there and can flare up at anytime.
