Metal on Plastic hip squeaking

I had my left hip replaced in June of 2010. It is the "Metal on Plastic" varitey. About 2 weeks ago I noticed a high pitched squeak coming from my left side. Several co-workers have heard it as well as family members.

I have a check up coming up but I'd like to know if anyone on here has ever experienced this with a metal on plastic hip. I have Googled "hip replacement metal on plastic squeaking" but all the results that come up relate to 'metal on metal' or 'metal on ceramic' - Nothing about metal on plastic.

The only difference with my body since this surgery has been a 65 pound weight loss in the past year.

Thanks for any and all comments.

Paul

Congratulations on the weight loss. Very impressive!

But II can't imagine loosing weight would affect the squeeking. How annoying.

It might not hurt to put a call in to your doctor. Anything out of the ordinary should be questioned. There could be a reasonable explanation.

Great job on the weight loss!!!

If you've no pain, then probably no problem. Though the loss of weight and body mass may have changed the dynamics of the connection metal on polyethylene.  Mine has certainly changed with the weight gain, and for the better as was underweight and lost lots whilst in hospital.  Your muscles may have slackened so the supporting structures weakened.  Also, if the poly has worn, that is bad news as you may have metal on metal and need relining.  Prob an X-ray the thing to be asking for......

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I do have an appointment scheduled on the 21st.

I do have some 'ache' every now and then, mostly in the groin area. I have also noticed that when that ache does show up the area feels warm as well. It doesn't last long.

hey Paul Hope all is well.  I have had my new hip about one year now and I have had the squeaking alot, sometimes accompanied by grating on ther exterior portion,.  Have had two steroid injections with some relief.  I would at least call your surgeon just to document and update your status.  He may order an early film to check it out.  Anything that changes, such as weight loss, may alter how the hip was placed.  IT IS YOUR BODY SO TAKE ANY AND ALL STEPS TO TAKE CARE OF IT!!!!  Goode luck, brother

What type of replacement do you have? When I Googled "hip replacement squeak" all the search results were related to the 'Ceramic on Metal and Metal on Metal", not like mine = Metal on Plastic.

I have had some achiness on BOTH hips since this squeak has started. The ache can be described as what I experienced BEFORE they were replaced. I have Osteoarthritis and the spurs that formed on both hips were getting bad so I had both replaced - The left one in June of 2010 and the Right one in June of 2011.

With this squeak and now the ache I don't know what's going on. I see my surgeon Wed. the 21st. Hopefully he'll have some insight on what's going on.

Thanks, Paul
