Hello Kitten1:
My name is Shelly and I am a nurse in the USA. I have Hashimoto's Thyroid disease since 1987. I am 54.
Back in 2002, I started to get Type 2 adult onset of Diabetes. My doctor placed me on Metformin (Glucophage) and it was a nightmare!
I had severe migraine headaches from it. I also have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) and I was told it would curb that, it did not. I ended up on insulin.
One thing worth knowing is Metformin is for Type 2 Diabetes and if you are not Diabetic you can cause pancreas burn out syndrome as it is designed to stimulate more insulin production and not exactly for weight loss! It can damage a good working pancreas by stressing it more! you do not grow the insulin making cells again, and once damaged you are out of luck!
If you make too much insulin the blood glucose will drop and you will get dizzy and may have Hypoglycemia and cause brain problems if sugar is depleted too far.. It is a powerful drug and not at all for dieting purposes.
I eat healthy and eat fish, lean meats, chicken salads, and avoid ready made and junk food. I walk about 30 to 40 mins a day and have lost 32 pounds. So if I can do it so can you!
No Beer or Alcohol as it places weight on quickly. Just watch carbs and avoid dairy and gluten products. Gluten can cause flare ups of Hashi's and Graves disease.
Please do not take Metformin unless you need it for Diabtetes, also there are proper diet meds that can be prescribed that are not harmful to a non diabetic. Just ask your MD/GP about it. You may ask for a referal to a diet specialist.
Regards,
Shelly
I guess that's a resounding NO!
