I have been on Mirt since November starting on 30mg. I started to have nightmares, nausea, anxiety, diarrhoea after about 5 months. The doctor reduced it to 15mg and all was ok for a while but have started feeling awful again. I saw Dr this morning and he is going to ween me off it over 2 weeks. I also take Fluoxetine which I tolerate well. My question of anyone is: has anyone had this experience on Mirtazapine? Did reducing/coming off help? My Dr mumbled something about Mirt having a 'paradoxical effect'. ?
Hi jean
It's normal to experiment those effects, the thing is to accept the depression and integrate it as part of us; when you do that medication starts doing better effects.
I prefer to have nightmares instead of lying on bed crying, you're not alone many people are suffering from that; if you feel anxious go for a walk go to the gym.
Enjoy small things sometimes we are overwhelmed by things that doesn't make us feel happy.
All the best for you
Hi Jean,
I am interested that you take fluoxetine as well as mirtazapine. I did not think you could take both at the same time. Do other people take both concurrently?. My impression from comments about Mirtazapine is that it is a fairly powerful product and can fix problems but also has the potential to generate a varied amount of side effects dependant on different individuals.
Hi Jean
It does sound to me very similar to when folk talk of the Mirtazapine 'pooping out' - stop working for some reason, this happens to quite a few people, then you are thrown into involuntary withdrawal from that med. All the symptoms are the same as withdrawal symptoms.
I'm wondering, when you went from 30 to 15 how did you taper? Did you just drop in one go, and how long ago was it?
I would question your doctors advice of "weaning you off in 2 weeks", I think that is far too fast, you might experience more wd effects. The slow WD from Mirt' is always recommended; far too many people really struggle with a fast taper. To read more, and have the informed choice you can read more here:
For advice on tapering Mirtazapine slowly at the recommended rate of no more than 10% every 3 or 4 weeks, please see the following which is within this forum,
