I have been suffering with depression for 12 half yrs but in the last 2 yrs it's hit me hard. I was taken prozac for 12 half yrs and went to the doctor and said I've hit rock bottom and the Meds I'm taking for my depression isn't working. So he started me on Mirtazapine 30mg one at night. I took it for 4wks and said I don't think it made a difference?. I went to see another Dr and explain what's happening? So she up me to 45mg one at night. I was wondering when I should notice a difference? At the moment I feel worse for ware about 3time a day. Silly thoughts come to mind and I start dewelling on it for the rest of the day. I only go bed when I'm tired because I can't sleep. Then when I finely settle I'm up and down like a yo-yo.
Another question can this medication cause night sweats I never experienced this before. I was cold and chives but when trying to warm my self up I'd sweat to the point head and hair like I've just got out of the shower?.
Hi clem: Sorry to know that you are suffering with Mirt.
I've been on it for 30 years -- 45, 30, 15 & 7.5 mgs. and I've gone thru all the side effects. YES night sweats and insomnia are not uncommon before your system adjusts (if it ever does) to the med. I'm on a maintenance dose of 15 mgs. at night for sleep and there is some residual antidepressant effect at that dose. Better for me for my depression at 30 mgs. Our systems are all different tho and what works for me may not work for you. In fact, seems like it's not doing the job.
I am not a physician or in the medical profession but I do have experience with this med. If, at 45 mgs, after 4-5 weeks, you are feeling no improvement or still suffering from intolerable side effects, this may not be the antidepressant for you. I'd see doc again. Cymbalta may be an option. I'm not recommending it, I have no experience with it, but two of my docs mentioned it when I started thinking Mirt was not doing the job and I tried to tapper off (I failed at tappering because all my original symptoms returned at 7.5 mgs.). You might want to ask doc about Cymbalta. Just a thot.
Good luck and hope Mirt kicks in for you soon because it is a good med, even tho it's really hard to withdraw from.
Hi Clem, sorry to hear that things are tough at the moment. I took prozac for many years and generally speaking my mood was stable. However life circumstances changed and I wanted TO TRY something else. Mirtazapine ...(Mirt ) was prescribed (15mg ) and this certainly helped with sleep. From what I have read in this forum, 15 mg is the most effective dosage for sleep...I can't comment on the effects of higher doses. Although I slept well it was not helping with mood etc. I decided I did not want it any more and stopped taking it . The effects of coming of Mirt for many people can be very traumatic and I experienced a very bad time. I am back on another antidepressant called Citralopram and my situation has eventually improved.
Your other question on night sweats perhaps may relate to alcohol consumption. I found that if I .....had a drink or two...then I would wake up very sweaty and often had to change nightwear .
To conclude I would try and stop taking Mirt long term and see whether 15mg helps , short term, and if you do like an alcoholic drink then try and stop and see if that fixes the sweating.
In my opinion Mirt is a very risky drug and I would never recommend it to anyone.
