mirtazapine withdrawal and sertraline side effects

Hi,

I have been on mirtazapine 25 mg for the past 1 n half year. Then my doc suggested I come down to 15mg and added sertraline 100mg. Long story short i have put on like crazy , i am not able to control my food craving nor able to exercise. Mirta helped me a lot in my depression but my weight gain is causing me more depression. So my doc got doent o 7.5 mg and since last week she asked me to go off mirta and increased sertra to 200 mg. I could see a huge difference in my appetite and im very happy about it. But the side effects are horrible. Diarrhea is worse, i feel tired, soemtimes i feel like im high , don't feel like eating , difficulty sleeping and then morning not able to wake up. Now i want to know is this a combination of both changes or is it only coz of one med. Also i am ready to go through these side effects as long as i will loose weight. Will i loose weight and how long will these symptoms last? I am holding on strong.

Dear Vanp,

I was put on Mirtz for sleep and anxiety, which eventually it did help. I am also on fluoxetine. However, like you I could not stop eating sweet stuff. I put weight on. I came off very mirtz slowly. I am now back to normal eating. It's known to put weight on. May be you shld taper off them, but do spk with yr GP.

Good luck.

Mirtazapine is difficult to discontinue and it is advised to do it slowly, no more than 10% every 3-4 weeks.  Any sickness, tummy flu, anxiety and insomnia are normal discontinuation/withdrawal symptoms of Mirt.  Your doctor should know to taper slowly and I am always upset to read of the bad advise they give to us patients ggrrrrr.....

Ive written up advice links under my status for a full informed choice youu can read them by clicking on my name & following the links.

As for Sert' start up symptoms, I wonder if you go to the Sert pages on the forum and ask there it might be simpler for you.

Wishing youu well.

Hi Deborah,

did you loose weight when u went off mirt?

Thanks Calmer.. do u know how long will the symptoms take to subside?

It's different for everyone, but for the majority it can last a long time, months & months ... not good news, am sorry.

Treat any sumptoms as they arise or ask on here for reassurance. Glad to read you are feeling strong. 😊
