I was booked in to have my bunions removed in January 2015. My surgeon's secretary has just phoned me to book me an appointment to discuss my surgery as he has decided not to perform MIS proceedures for at least the next two years but he will be happy to op using traditional open surgery. I am gutted. Anyone out there that has had MIS surgery? I need some reviews to help me make up my mind what to do. The surgeon said he will refer me to another surgeon if I insist on MIS. I am having op under private med (BUPA).

I have never heard of a MIS surgery either.

Hi Bev, where abouts are you? I have just had a scarf ad Atkins proccedure by MIS here in London. I am only 9 weeks in but so far so good. It was much much easier than the traditional procedure which I had on the other foot 14 years ago. No contest!

Please read my reply on MIS which I had 2 months ago on both feet.
If you go for traditional open surgery you may have much more pain. This type of surgery will be much longer healing time and a bigger scar. With MIS, I have two small pin pricks of wounds plus a very tiny one on each big toe where the temporary wire was inserted. After 2 months they are fading nicely - in fact the one on my right foot is now invisible. That is the main difference with MIS and traditional open surgery.
Your surgeon may not feel competent or able enough to perform MIS at the moment as it is a highly specialised techique and surgeons need expert skill and experience. Your surgeon will be an expert in traditional surgery.
I hope that will help you to decide which surgery is best for you.

It's basically keyhole surgery. You have 3 little marks insteadt of long scar.
The surgeon is a foot and ankle man that specialised in keyhole for bunions. He attended a conference in Brighton last week and on the back of that he has decided to stop performing MIS for bunions! WTH!. I think Im going back the the drawing board looking for a new surgeon. It took me ages to find this one.

Also standard surgery does damage to the nerves, hence pain & numbness etc;...
No contest to go for MIS if you can & with some insurance companies you may have to pay a top up fee!

I had both my feet operated on by Mr Redfern at London foot and ankle clinic and I can certtanley recommend him. I understand he also practices at various other clinics in Sussex good luck!

I went in for my op last Thursday. I was scheduled to have the Scarf Akin Osteotomy with bunionectomy. However, on the day the procedure was downgraded to a simple cheilectomy, shaving of the bunion and a good 'spring clean'. The recovery rate is very much quicker and I've had little or no pain. My stitches are due to be removed next Wednesday.

Wish I'd had the choice I have 2large scares on my foot and a pin in my toe pin comes out on Monday scar is still very crusty a bit worried about that

I had MIS two years ago and although working in the NHS where they didn't do MIS had decided to have bunion and hammer toe done this way to save infection avoid deeper surgery and have a much quicker recovery. I am so pleased I did. Mr Joel Vernois at Haywards Heath (Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre) did it and it was on the NHS. Excellent Centre and such kind staff. How disappointing. I have not had MIS but had private surgery first time round and nhs this time around. scars do fade in time. Do you know why he us not doing this procedure? If he us inexperienced then is best you are referred elsewhere.
Where do you live? At least this gives u time to research for a good surgeon

I am having a bilateral MIS in 2 weeks time in Brighton (Mr Redfern). I saw him last week and was most impressed. Added to which he has performed over a 1,000 MIS procedures (probably more since) and he also operated on my girlfriend as well. He or Joel Vernois are the guys to go to!
