so have been having terrible back pain for a while docs suspect some form if arthritis but not yet confirmed.. they suggested ibuprofen but I said I’d heard you couldn’t take ibuprofen with citalopram? so I’ve been given omeprazole to take which they say will make it safe to take ibuprofen with citalopram… anyone else had this ?

My doctor gave it to me because I asked him for something because I was taking pain killers often. When I looked it up on the drug interaction website I read that there was a major interaction taking them with citalopram so I never took them. It also said that if you are taking them together you might have to be monitored, it probably depends on the dose of citalopram that you on. There may be an alternative that you can take that doesn’t interact with citalopram. If I take painkillers I take them with food and a glass of milk. (I don’t think ibuprofen or aspirin are good with citalopram in any case). All the details are on the drug interaction website👍.

hi sean, the interaction risk is it may cause bleeding of the stomach if taken for a prolonged length of time, the Dr has given you omperazole to protect the stomach lining

I take paracetamol and sometimes low dose aspirin. Paracetamol isn’t an anti inflammatory though. Perhaps you could ask for an alternative to omeprazole that doesn’t interact with citalopram. It may depend on what dose citalopram you are on too. Maybe your pharmacist can advise you.
I take ibuprofen for my headaches and monthly cramping. The doctor and pharmacist said that it would be okay as long as I wasn’t taking high doses for long periods of time.
As far as the medicine to protect your stomach, ask your doctor about protonix, it’s a stomach medicine like omeprazole and it doesn’t show any interactions. If you’re having to take something for pain regularly that may help, just ask your physician.
IMO, omeprazole is a nasty drug and should only be taken in extreme cases… like barret’s with dysplasia… some studies find that regular Pepcid is almost as effective and far less dangerous far fewer side effects. Docs hand omeprazole out for simple heartburn… BAD mistake!
