this afternoon I sought advice from the chemist about what cough remedy I could take with Citalopram. I was reassured that Robitussin 'Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide' was fine. (I should add I didn't speak to the chemist, but just to the counter assistant). When I got home I downed the standard 10ml of the medicine, and later set about reading the leaflet enclosed. To much horror it clearly states Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking an SSRI'.
A Google search talks of Serotonin Syndrome being the result of such a combination. Should I stop the cough mixture straight away?
If u look on almost every cough medicine out there it says that! I asked my Dr and he said it was ok to take pretty much any cough medicines! I still try and avoid them all tho! I would give Dr a call and make sure it's ok!
Thanks Beth. I'll survive till morning without, and seek medical advice again. It's all such a minefield.
Spoke with the pharmacist this morning, who raised no concerns. He checked his books of interactions, and nothing to be worried about. Said the medicine manufacturer likely being over cautious on their litertature. Would need to drink gallons of the medicine before interactions could occur, if even at all.
