Mood Dropped

Hi folks, been on 20 mg cits now for 6 months, the last month my mood has been low, snappy and just a bad attitude, and no motivation .I'm trying to snap out of it and lift my mood, which sometimes works, but the mood and attitude can change in an instant.

Any ideas to lift the mood and help get back on track and motivated greatly apprieciated

Hi, I am having the same problem, but I think it just means we still feel. This I think is a good thing. I really don't want to be numb. It really has helped my anxiety for sure, mood is up and down but not depressed. I'm ok with this. Stay strong, its ok to feel, even if it's not what you want to feel. Tomorrow is another day.

Your moods will still go up and down. I had been on them for many years and not sure the overall benefit, but my anxiety is worse now I have stopped. The citalopram can help but is only part of the way you feel, if there are other unresolved issues causing stess or health problems then they will still have an affect.

I replied to a post a few weeks ago, about different generic brands of citalopram, I found there was a definate difference with some brands on how I felt. It may be worth considering and trying to get the same ones each time from the chemist.

It helps to improve your overall health and mood by eating healthily, avoiding too much sugar, caffeine and alcohol and doing exercise. I know it is easier said than done when feeling bad, but try and enjoy the sun and being outside over summer.

Nick, I too have been on 20mgs for 6 months and felt last week that maybe I had started to get used to the dose and perhaps it wasnt working as well. I think that I will give it another 6 months before looking at increasing the dose ( if the doctor agrees of course). In life we have ups and downs and mood swings so in a way I agree with Lori, at at least still feeling.

Overall I am a better person for the cit my wife certainly thinks so . Generally alot more relaxed and at times happy, Keep taking the cit and one day you will feel like you are back in the good days and will be thankfull for the journey you have been on as it will make you stronger as a person

When you're recovering on Citalopram, your mood will fluctuate.  Sometimes you may get the odd few weeks when you feel low, but this is normal.  Don't try and fight it - let it be there, eat healithly, try not to eat sugar, exercise, get out and socialise ..... slowly your mood should lift.

Yes it can also depend on other issues happening in your life which need to be addressed to, but often most people haven't anything to be depressed about.

When I recovered, it was around 3-4 months before I noticed anything happening, and by 6 months I felt really well but continued to have low points for some time to come. I've been well for years now, and still occasionally get the odd slightly low time which doesn't last long.

It's worth reading books by Dr Claire Weeks, another called 5-HTP The Natural Way to Overcome Depression, Obesity by Michael T Murray and a new book I've just received Cooking to Cure by Angela Dailey.  These last 2 books talk about nutrition, and both mention sugar.

Different SSRI's also suit different people, and of course different doses too.  Sometimes it trial and error getting it tailored to suit you.

This medicine is not addictive by the way - your body will not start to 'get used to it' and needing to up your dose.  You can stay on this medicine for life if need to.

K xx

Hi Nick. 20mg is quite a low dose and it maybe you need an increase.  It also could mean that citalopram doesn't really suit you and you need a different medication. Either way, speak to your GP a.s.a.p.
