Morning pain

Hi all

I'm 6 weeks post op tomorrow and have been doing well, been back for check up, surgeon said all good. My problem is since physio has stepped up a notch to using a resistance band, I am hurting a lot more than before. Mornings are the worst and pain is in upper thigh area on weight bearing! I'm not using crutches now and after taking ibuprofen and paracetamol it eases up. Any advice as to how to ease this pain, it depresses me so much.

Thanks

Karen

Hi Karen

Sounds like you have over done things speak with your physio. In the meantime ease off a bit. I did it he same and ended up hobbling around for a week. Keep taking the tabs will help in the meantime it's still very early days so don't fret too much

dear karen,

funny you mention this --- my muscles everywhere are on fire after activity - I saw my PT yesterday and she told me I had acid build up in muscles - I wish she had told me this before though - apparentl when you increase exercises too soon or too fast, this happens - your muscles need to repair themselves and that causes the discomfort ----

resistance band is more streneous, so start very slowly - maybe 2 repetitions 2-3 times a day - and then slowly increase - she did not mention this to me; gave me resistance band and showed me the exercises which I did with a vengeance -

don't worry okay - do what you can - no need to impress anybody or be hard on yourself ... .

congratulations on the good outcome of your surgery !!!

big warm hug and come back here anytime

Hi Karen,

Sounds as though you may have over done it.  Let your physical therapist know.  There are things they can do to help relax the stressed muscle.  Each time that I went to PT, they would ask how things went after the last session and then tailor the that workout depending on the previous outcome.  The reason is that everyone heals differently and are at different levels of physical fitness.  It's on a 'one size fits all'.

After each workout you should be icing your muscles.  Now that it's been several hours after the fact, you can alternate heat and ice treatments throughout the day.  Always remember to stretch prior & after any workout.  This too will help prevent muscle strain and cramps.

Best of luck!

Listen to your body. Exercise shouldn't hurt. That's what my physical therapist told me. Take care Vickie

Hi Karen,  I am 12 weeks out and have the same experience.  It is frustrating as I am otherwise doing pretty well and feeling as though I can and should do more than the previous week.  No wise words to offer, I guess the oft repeated mantra of 'be patient, you've had major surgery' is the reality for most of us.  I think holding myself to the bar set by some superstars who are in amazingly speedy recoveries has not been helpful!

best wishes!

Hi Karen, maybe a bit too soon to be using a resistance band? Would have thought it would be a strain on your new hip. Take it easy.

Everyone is different and, as others have said, if it hurts, dial it back. If the physio doesn't get this, then ask them how many hip surgeries they have had! I find that there are an awful lot of experts out there who profess to know how you should feel and what you can do. Not one of which have ever gone through a hip replacement. You must do what you are confident and comfortable with.
