Morphine patches

My doctor has given me oral morphine but it is making me so sick every time I take it for hours on end, has anyone tried the patches? Do they make you sick as well? Having real difficulty with pain relief. Nothing else works, tramadol doesn't touch it. Anything else work for you ?? Thank you all - getting so so so tired.

Norspan - Thats what the Dr gave me, its a clear patch you put on the back of your hip for a week, and then change over. I too am hopeless with Morphine, makes me as sick as a dog. The hospital also needs to know you have a reaction to Morphine when you have your surgery, best to tell them you are allergic to it, then they question you about your allergic reaction. During surgery and afterwards they gave me Fentanyl, works like morphine, but didn't make me sick, what a relief that was, also I think for the nursing staff not having me vomiting all over everything, even though I had no stomach contents to vomit.

Hi Rose

Oral morphine had same effect on me. Tramadol also little relief.

That is really helpful thanks Lyn, I am waiting for dr to call me back to switch to your recommendation. I have persevered with the oral morphine but just can not do it any longer! Hip feels like a drill.

Don't read this if you are are eating - years ago a young Dr when I had kidney stones diagnosed at hospital been waiting hours for pain relief at that point, arrived at my bedside with Morphine injection, he said this will stop the pain, having had it previous I warned him that I WOULD VOMIT across the room, as soon as it hit my bloodstream and I suggested he give me maxalon first. He said something a about know-it-all & whinging patients, and went ahead with the injection. I smiled at him as he gave it to me, thinking I hope this works as fast as I think it is going to, it did, and I made sure his lovely white coat was my target. I could have turned aside but didn't, he needed a lesson. His comment as he walked away was stupid -----, I called out I agree.

Good one Lyn

oral morphine does not work, been there done it. ask for oxycodone ( longtec) slow release this will work far better and if like me you will not need a high does as the morphine is being releases slowly

Your post made me laugh out loud!! That is so funny! You have really made me giggle this morning even with no sleep and being sick all night! I am sure that dr will think twice before ignoring a patient again!! )

I couldn't agree more. Terrible sickness nothing like pain relief , thank goodness I didn't take the upper end of the dosage. Thank you for your recommendation. Did you take it after your operation as well ? Or are you still waiting?

Do they give you this after the operation? Abit worried now as really don't want to be as sick as much as this after my operation.

Hi Rose

I am still pre op. Taking for pain relief.

I had given them the info that I reactive to Morphine, for 1st THR, and maybe I had not made myself clear enough, and I was really constantly sick, I coudn't keep anything down, even water. ended up being in hospital the best part of a week. For my 2nd THR when I went in for pre-surgery they were bringing up the issue of me being sick, with the previous surgery, and constantly vomiting, and I said if you had listened to me in the first place I wouldn't have been as sick. At that point one of the juniors said instead of referring to myself as reactive to morphine, I needed to describe it as an allergy, so I do so now. End result is they gave me Fentanyl, oh bliss - no pain, and no vomiting, out of hospital in 2 half days. They gave me ENDONE 5mg, for pain relief at home, I can manage them just, I feel a little nauseous but generally OK, have been put back on them for a spinal issue a few weeks ago, but have been able to stop taking them after a couple of weeks.

yes i did i was on oxycodone and longtec, took the same does as before the opp for a week  then slowly reduced them with the docrors help , took me 8 weeks in total to get off them

Hi Rose, I had a norspan patch for 2 weeks post-op, plus endone tablets. After a week I gave up the endone as it made me feel sick and funny in the head. Managed fine with the patches and topped up with paracetamol.

Shortz is right about the paracetamol. It boosts the narcotics like magic. Have you used stematil or macaroni for nausea? I presume you have.

How terrible for you to have the dilemma of terrible pain or crippling nausea. 2 horrible options there and I hope you can get some relief soon.

It is not unusual for pts to feel nauseous or vomit when opiod analgesics are newly prescribed. If you need it a dr can prescribe an antiemetic so u maybe more likely to tolerate the pain killers. The nausea usually wears off after 3/4 days. However it could be too high dosage. Or if u simply cannot tolerate it the doc could try an alternative med.

Now trying Zomorph.
