I've been trying to find a combination of treatments to help with my PN pain. I've now exhausted them all and nothing works. So my Doctor has just given me Morphine as Tramadol was not doing anything. I've been on the Morphine for 3-4 days and my feet and ankles have swollen quite a lot and become very painful. Has anyone else experienced this?
OMG!!!
I suffer neuropathic pain which is intolerable at times. I take Gaberpentin, have you tried this drug? Try raising your legs above your hips when resting. I think you maybe best to ring your GP and ask them why this as happened, i don't know about the side effects of morphine, but this does sound quite drastic.
Have you cobsidered acupuncture. Some articles say it can help.
Hi BigG ..I would phone your out of hours doctor and ask them ..best to not leave it ,they'll be able to put your mind at ease
what meds hve you tried for neve pain? The opiates re not real good choice for nerve pain, they have a tendency to make the pain feel worse. plus the additional factor of an gradual percevied less effectiveness of the drugs makes you crave more and stronger ones.
Hi Elizabeth.
Gaberpentin is one of the ones I tried and it had no effect. Off to see doc today.
Cheers. Grant.
Thanks Derek.
I've heard this somewhere before. It's soon going to be my only remaining option I think. Cheers. Grant.
Good point Jan. thanks.
This is really interesting. I've never felt worse than I do now and it's the highest dose of Opiat painkiller I've been on yet. In terms of drugs for PN specifically I've tried Gaberpentin, Carbomazepine, Amitriptyline, Pregabelin, Duloxetine.
At the same time as the above I've been taking a anti-inflammatory as well as Tramadol.
Having gone through the specific treatments above for PN and found nothing that works my Doctor suggested a stronger pain killer so just come off Tramadol and on to Morphine. This is just until I eventually see a Neurologist at the end of this month who can hopefully offer some alternative because I am in agony and more so than ever before. Thanks. Grant.
Hi,
I've had NP for a few years now I had tried various treatments for the pain and I was getting very low and then was put on Fentanyl patches, wow how good is that stuff, the best NP pain relief I've had, it's much, much stronger than morphine, it's a bit of trial and error to get the dose right but it's brilliant, get some and get your life back
Good luck , you're not alone
Thanks. I'll discuss these with the Doc this morning. Much appreciated.
There are some who specialise in it for neuropathy. If you Google, neuropathy accupuncture and your area a spcialist might come up.
this is a repost from another thread....my eperiances
over a five year period i progressed from using Tylenol with Codeine #3 to using morphene all the while the pain was getting worse which is why my dr continued increasing the dose and strength of the pain meds. it got to the point that I could not walk or stand because the pain was so bad. i ended up in the hospital an went through all the tests for neuropathy, bone damage and arthritis and there was no indication that any these conditions had dramatically gotten worse compared to the same tests done about 3 years before. The doctors said that saw no reason why the pain was so extreme. then i had a visit from a doctor of pharmacology and he explained to me that the opidoid meds were the cause of the extreme pain i was experiencing. his recommendation was to stop taking them and go with the Klomlpin and Indomethacin. That happened 8 months ago an my pain level is considerably less than it was then.
to answer your question of how i got off the meds. there was the drs way, which was to slowly taker off and would have taken he said 3-4 months. i tried that for 2 weeks and it really..really....really sucked.
the way i did it was straight cold turkey. I knew it was going to be bad and it was! l have had a few withdrawls form opiates in past and knew what was going to happen. you cannot be told what it's going to be like, you have to experiance it. past experiences prepared and helped me through it. i also had a very helpful an knowledgeable mental health professional that helped me prepare for andwork my way through this. lt's very important to have this kind of backup.
I was admitted to a very large teaching hospital and the hospital has just about any specialist you can think of. so being in the the hospital with an unusual problem, you will find that it draws out a specialist that you would have a hard time finding on your own.
klonopin/ clonazepam is a anxiety med that i use off label for pain. it takes the edge of the pain and helps me sleep at night. seems that at night time the pain isthe worst. getting a good night sleep is real challenging . so anything that helps to get a good nights sleep is good.
indomethacin is an anti-inflammatory drug that i take for arttitis and it will also help me get some sleep.
I have taken the edge off the pain with these two meds so that i can function. the pain is still there, just hidden a little. you need to manage your pain and not let it manage you.
go here, same thing was discussed ....https://patient.info/forums/discuss/small-fiber-neuropathy-500262
You might want to try Hypnoanalgesia, i.e., the use of hypnotic suggestion to relieve pain. i used it when i cam off morphine.
