MRI guided prostate biopsy advice needed

Hi all,

I've been in obscene prostate pain for the last year. I'm 60 and have a history of acute infectious prostatitus, which always hurt like hell for a week then got better. This time it didn't. It was just prostate pain for the first six months, but the last six months epididymis on right side has been hurting like hell too. Switched urologists after six months when the first one quit on me. Antibiotics, cat scan then nothing. Didnt think biopsy was needed. Current urologist did ultrasound of prostate/seminal vesicles at my insistence but nothing showed up. My PSA was 6.5 last year, and dropped to 3.5 four months ago. My testerone had been < 300 so started injections. Last week the blood work for testerone showed my PSA had shot up to 9.5. so am getting biopsy ASAP. (Now I'm really scared). The nurse said that insurance companies don't want to approve MRI guided biopsies. The alternative is what, CAT? I'm thinking I need to fight for the MRI. any opinions? I've been in screaming pain for the last year and could not get any action till my PSA finally jumped up. I'm frankly terrified. Any advice on how to handle would be greatly appreciated.

I am 57 and you sound like me. First of all dont worry about it Mayo knew I had cancer in 2004 but couldnt find it. Insurance will not pay for a MRI guided biopsy till you have at less one regular. If you need to ask me more question I can give you my email address

Yes, please do. I had a 3t prostate MRI last week but don't have results back. I wish I had thought of asking for them to include the pudendal nerve. Also had cystoscopy which was negative. How did they know you had cancer, if you don't mind me asking. I hope you are doing ok. And am having nerve block in L1/L2 spine this Thursday. I was against just treating the pain, but maybe it will help to diagnose what's causing it. I don't know that it is my prostate for sure, but that's sure where it hurts. Chronic insane pain sure shows you what kind of man you are. You have to fight and not give up. God it's tough.

First of all was your prostrate enlarged?

My cancer never hurt.

I would not let they do a biopsy until your PSA gets around 10 I had my PSA between 3 and 7 for 10 years before it jumped. I had 2 biopsies during that time that did not show any thing.

As I have said this cancer is slow moving
