MRI Scans

I have just read Kate's horror story regarding MRIs. Is this procedure required for every THR?  I find this story truly terrifying!

I havent read the story but i dont think you need an MRI. I had one when i was younger but never had one since. I dont think they do them often. What was her story?

Having an MRI is not necessarily the norm in this situation - most folks have a pre-op X-Ray

HI Susie

It wasn't the MRI scan that cause the pain it was the steroid injection.  You don't need to have these. I am having hip replacement  op tomorrow but refused the steroids as they don't work well if you have no cartlidge left.  My friend has had 2 steroid injections and they have worked well for her hip pain, if they are successful they are not a permanent solution and then the pain is back.  Terrified about my op but don't see a way forward without it now.

Goodluck for your op. Have you been told if your allowed to eat before it or is it one where you cant eat for 24 hours before? Or was it 10? I cant remember

HI Sarah

Thank you for your good wishes.  I have to stop food and any drinks other than water from midnight, going in at 7am but have no idea what time the op will be.  Nerves are getting the better of me, so grateful to be able to dip into this site tonight.

So thats 10 hours isnt it? Im so bad at maths. Make sure you have something yummy tonight. Dont worry as soon as your at hospital all the lovely staff will take care of you and all your worries will be gone. I used to take a cuddly toy with me to hospital when i was younger and tbh i probably will this time to 😂 but in probably still young enough tk get away with walking around with a blankie and soft toy hahaha. I hope

An MRI scan is used only if there is a need to look at vessels and soft tissue, the contrast dye is injected in the area so that it shows on scan.

Sometimes s CT scan is performed when there is a need to look at the bones in more detail, for example when there has been previous surgery/ damage that may not show up on X-Ray. Neither are used routinely for Standard THR.

Kate's story is awful and she should have been given support during the procedure!

Iv had that dye thing done so many times. Iv got tiny i jection scars next to my groin from it hahaha

Sarah I took my teddy in with me to all my ops when I was little and they would bandage one of its legs to match my plaster!

They never bandged any of my teddies 😢 feel cheated now

I am taking a fleecy blankie too, I do have a cuddly toy a bagpuss cat but wont take him with me

Good luck, you'll be fine and relieved when it's all over. There is so much support on here for you, it has helped me so much!

Vicki

I would and id ask them tk bandage his tail or something to haha

I've had 2 replacements and just xrays.

Good luck tomorrrow.  Just think, by this time tomorrow, you will have your new hip, and you will be on your way to a more mobile and pain free life.

Just 24 hours...

All the best, and a very Happy New Year for 2016

No, I didn't have an mri scan and I would also add that I know hundreds of people who have had mri scans and have not had this kind of problem.

Many thanks.  Sarah's horror story is down to simple medical negligence and a total lack of concern or interest in both the patient and doing their job!  I believe it may be a malpractice issue, as they were much ore interested in their conversation than administering the MRI.

Hi Sarah:

Just received your message.  But, I think you have already read Kate's story about her MRI injection.

A very Happy New Year to you, and I hope that 2016 brings you closer to much better health and mobility.

I only read the forst parahraph but was out so didnt finish it. Might have to go hunt it down and read it now.

Happy New Year to you to and best wishes for 2016 to you to x
