Multiple hip surgeries and dislocations

IN the last year ive had a horrible time , had a infection from a revision surgery 3.5 yrs ago which was finally found march last year after alot of pushing by me to find out why i was in so much pain . July 2018 had the first of the two phase hip surgeries with pick line with antibiotics was done , i had a few issues with recovery . Low blood pressure 6 hour recovery after a 5/6 hr operation , i went home 5 days later . Once home i was all good but around the 2 week mark i felt movement then bang i dislocated ( the most painful thing i,ve ever experienced ) then 5 days after that it went again ! this was horrific i never felt so scared , i could hardly walk needed help to shower/ get dressed / get in and out of bed in which i was very reluctant to do as was terrified it was going to come out . No one knew what to do or help , the surgeon put me in hip brace for a month ( pain was well up there ) .Once the infection had gone i then went in to have 2nd stage hip replacement with custom cup , had 8 screws put in as my abscaptular area was munted from previous op . So another big surgery and recovery , blood pressure dropped to a dangerous level and was put in hdu to try bring it back up . Had in both surgeries 2/3 bags of blood , left hospital after 5 days . Was coming along really well good pain levels , but after around a month it dislocated again ! hip brace again . By this stage i had ptsd and was seeing a phycologist i had anxiety with everything i did , and very weak . I finally reached the 3 month stage , thought id be all ok went away for the weekend for the first time in months and would you believe it dislocated again ! I can,t tell you how that just ruined me . The surgeon sent me for a CT scan and saw i had alot of muscle damage from infection and surgeries and that he would try stop it coming out so another surgery two weeks later . So far still in, post op 4.5 months but i still have pain in groin / buttocks / outside of knee and above ankle , also swelling in these areas ? I walk pretty good but standing or sitting to long i get sore or if i do to much , which is not alot as still being careful . What do you think this could be ? I walk every day and do my exercisers , I am 53 years old , I have in my 40 s had two hip replacements left and right with no problems with those , so I know what sort of pain to deal with after ops . I feel like the medical system has failed me and that they do not listen to me , all the times i said i was sore or felt things were not right i was right .

I do not know what to say other than you are having an extremely bad experience and I feel for you.

me again
has anyone had similiar to my story would love to hear how they went

Angela, I am sorry for all you’ve gone through. My experience has been similar although it began differently. My hip replacement was in 2015. Though I had a serum pocket develop, after about 3 months I was fully recovered and had 3.5 perfect hip years. In March 18 I fell on my hip, got up and went on about my business. Seemingly no harm done. 10 days later my hip dislocated. Then 2 more dislocations, and total revision surgery July '18. Five months of recovery and did well, although i now had a 3/4" leg length discrepancy causing a limp. Dec '18 my 4th dislocation. I was beyond discouraged, major set back, my hip was now very noisy, clunking.Dr had no idea why, or what was happening. At this point I went to a new surgeon who wasnt sure why either but urged extreme caution, strict hip precautions and said if it dislocated again I would need surgery again. I was mortified. Jan 21, 19 it dislocated again. ER docs had a hard time getting it back in place and said I would have a lot of pain. A very unstable prosthesis, loud clunking, led to revision again Feb 13 '19 . The muscles and tissues were destroyed from all the traumas. This time it was a failed Stryker Dual motion implant that er docs had pushed the liner out of place from and was floating in my hip. I had an 11 day hospital stay due to excessive drainage from my incision. No pt, extreme caution, rest at home. Was readmitted after 6 days with high fever for a incision an drainage of wound. During surgery staph infection was confirmed to the hip joint and I had yet a 3rd revision, 9 day hospital stay from sepsis, picc line, 42 days of iv antibiotics, 3 months of oral antibiotic. I was so fortunate that 4 weeks after Mar 4 procedure i had no pain, just weakness and limp. I am now 5.5 months out and walk 1-2 miles a day, with a cane, but no pain. I am starting pt soon to build strength. Have only been allowed to do home exercises and walking. I am always cautious about my movements, still dont bend a lot or cross my legs LOL. You will recover albeit slow. I never dreamed anyone else could have such a bad experience as me til I read your post. You’re not alone. I’m in the US, Michigan. Hang in there, I’m with ya!
Continued recovery wishes, Deborah

oh wow ! sounds horrible as well , did you have huge pain with dislocations ? I hear varying stories ? I know it will take probably the full 18 months to recover but this continuing groin /buttocks/ /knee/ ankle pain ? ache is very disconcerting .
i also do 1 to 2 miles walking a day and home exercisers , am starting physio end of month . I wake up everyday willing the pain to just go so i can do normal things again , i really just want to be good . Feel like they think i make this stuff up
It is great to hear i,m not alone in this horror story and someone else has as well , somewhat comforting . Thank you for replying i live on new zealand

I did have horrific pain with each dislocation. I could not move a hair without excruciating pain. Was taken by ambulance to nearest ER for the same treatment each time. Then follow up with ortho etc. In the past I’ve had back issues (4 surgeries, the last one six months before my hip saga) so I am very weak in my hip and back. I am looking forward to pt in the hopes of getting rid of the limp and cane. My energy level is still not normal but I press on as much as I can. I’m 68 so older than you, but have always been active. Let me know how you’re getting along. We have a unique connection, and my daughter’s name is also Angela
Have a great day, this journey is one day at a time.
