Mum - Severe Rumination switching from sertraline to Citalopram

Hi all,

I’m hoping to get some advice and hopefully some positive stories. My mum is suffering from severe rumination where she thinks about pasts events and then she feels angry that she’s constantly thinking about this and how it’s affecting her life and how she shouldn’t be thinking negative, this then turns into a cycle. She understands that she needs to stop this and says constantly she’s going to stop but it just carries on.

My local GP suggested sertraline over a year ago and it worked to calm her slightly for about a few years but over the past 3 months it’s got really bad. The sertraline was increased to 200mg about 12 weeks ago but had no affect. Spoke to the GP today and they suggested switching to Citalopram 10mg and weaning off Sertraline over the next few days.

I just wanted to ask if anyone has experienced something similar and if Citalopram helped when Sertraline didn’t?

Any advice would be great as it’s really difficult seeing her like this.

Hello, sorry to hear about this . I struggle with anxiety and OCD thoughts that get stuck and am currently on 40mg of Prozac daily which is helping me, but it does take a long time and isn’t a quick process unfortunately.

I have come across this website that seems to be quite helpful in explaining the issues with anxiety and obsessing over thoughts so I thought I’d share it and hope it helps!

Hi,

Thank you so much for sharing the information. I’ll definitely look into it and share it with my mum.

I have been told that it does take a while to take affect and I think this is the hardest part as it’s not knowing if it will work or not. I’ll keep this thread updated.

Has anyone had any other experiences with Citalopram and rumination?
