Muscle ache near scar on side\back from op

Hi all, it has been a while but I need your help

I had THR right side on Sept 2015 lately I have been experiencing ache or pain in the area where incision was made not anything like the pain before op but nagging pain

I work on construction and a lot of physical activity is part and parcel with this

Sometimes when I try to reach overhead and I mean stretching to reach I get sore in this area not sure what to do about this giving up work is NOT an option

Any advice would really be appreciated

Thank you

Andolino

I would get it checked out either by your GP or hospital. It is most likely just muscle pain but it could be a sign of something more serious.

Hope it turns out to be nothing much

Mike

What sort of physical exercise do you do beyond the physical demands of your job?  Do you still do your physical therapy or any yoga/stretching? What is your general physical condition outside of the hip surgery issues?  I am in construction as well and after 30 + years it's taken its toll.  These days most of my work is in the shop and I hire guys to do the heavy lifting. I am looking to schedule my 1st THR early this year.  What I always did prior to arthritis beginning to rule my world was to spend active and intense periods between projects at the gym maintaining my physical conditioning and would continue that through projects for as long as possible.  As I usually worked a 60 hour week that would be doable for a few months but I still continued to stretch and maintain flexibility.  Deep tissue massage has always been something I relied on.  What I found was physical work does less to keep you in shape as it does to wear you down.  Over the years I found it more beneficial to work on flexibility and specific muscle strengthening to provide me the strength for the job not the other way around.  Also from what you describe as your pain I wonder if it's not the psoaz muscle that's giving you a hard time.  A good deep tissue therapist might work that out for you and recommend a stretching routine for support.  Best wishes.

Get some wheat germ oil and use it on the scar. Massage it. If it feels ropey, you need to massage it pretty well to iron it out. Give it a try and see what happens.

You may just be stretching muscles or scar tissue.  Call your doc.

Thanks Ducksoup, but i would have thought after 2 years I should be well able for any activity a friend of mine had the hip replaced and was back in crossfit after 9 months and is still actively involved in it. I was also in crossfit up to the onset of hip pain but I have never returned to it since op, probably afraid i would do damage to new hip or the other one.

Thanks Chris, I will try to locate this wheat germ oil

Thanks Michael appreciate your concern I feel a lot better but then again I'm off work for weekend so I'll see tomorrow or coming week if it's constant or not .......

Jim, sounds like we both are similar in our life styles, I have always trained in gyms or more recently at crossfit well at least I did before hip op. The pain I experienced before the op has left a deep scar inside and I can't seem to get back into the gym probably worried about damage to new hip or maybe damage to other one

I have had the x rays on both and they came back fine so really I should be back in the gym just a mental block I suppose

Thank you so much for your words of advice

I am not terribly familiar with crossfit but my impression is involves a fair amount of movement including some torquing/twisting/impact movements.  Wondering, if this is so, should you not be considering an alternative to fitness.  The muscle ache you describe sounds to either be psoaz or one of the glute muscles [assuming your op was posterior].  Would a yoga class or maybe even a pilates class be available and something you'd consider?  Don't know your age or the surgical approach used in your op, but if this is recent development it could just be muscle strain that will work itself out with some gentle persuasion.  I get a lot of relief from swimming laps- not even looking to max it for cardio just a balanced, focused on form/techniques means to get the muscles to relax and move them without impact.  Can you identify the muscle you find bothering you?

I seem to be fine again, I have started light training concentrating on the core. Maybe I have been feeling sorry for myself all along, but now I am determined to get back in the game. I awoke 2 nights ago with severe cramp in the right thigh, it kept me awake for an hour but luckily it went away I get up at 5am 5 days a week and get home at 8pm so sleep is needed. I found myself getting very stiff and not a bit agile like I used to be when in work but I am putting this down to lack of exercise and stretching.

hopefully the new regime will sort me out Thanks again for your help and advice.

Glad to hear you're making progress.  Sleep is a necessity especially when one is healing from a trauma as you know.  Don't cheat yourself, the body needs to rest.  Good to see you making such an effort- self pity is my worse enemy- it robs me of motivation and taking the actions that will actually help.  It's a pretty universal behavior but not one we can't overcome.  You're making the effort so I think success is on your side.  Remember to be good to yourself as well- the balance between self discipline and self compassion.  Your history will serve you well.  Best regards.
