muscle pain in upper back

I keep getting back pain either side of my spine in two places, the physio says its a muscle strain but they keep coming back month after month could anyone help is thier anything I can take to help the recovery time and or to take to prevent my muscles tearing again thank.

Hi stu1969,

I assume, as you are seeing a physio, that your doctor has ruled out any serious medical condition and you have non-specific back pain.

I suffered chronic back pain which originated in my upper back.  I tried different treatments physio, chiropractic, osteopathy, massage etc. but nothing helped.

A consultant orthopaedic surgeon told me 'your back pain is caused by poor posture'.  Unfortunately he didn't go on to tell me how to fix it!

I had to find a way to improve my posture, and now live pain free by training regularly.  Tai Chi works for me.

I think any system that focuses on correct alignment, relaxation, stretching, core strength would be beneficial.

To sum up, I don't think there is any medicine to take to fix your back.  Training to improve posture worked for me and I would reccomend to anyone suffering unexplained back pain.

Good luck

Iain

hi stu you like me have had past physio treatment yes it does keep coming back

just like mine i had chiropractor treatment which worked for a while but to expensive

the nhs unfortunately does not offer this treatment but the pain i get now is different

to when i was going to private treatment i fell off a ladder about 5 years ago had treatment then for frozen shoulder that worked but now i keep getting mid back pain goes into my ribs and causes belly ache i looked on the net and found some very similar symptoms to what i have the problem with me i think is possible costochondritis unfortunately there is lots of different causes of back troubles you just have to persist at your doctors like me 5 years on and still no further forward good luck albert

Thanks for that Ian I will definitely try some of your suggestions and hopefully I can overcome this nightmare I've been having for six months now .

The only things that I can suggest for back pain is as follows;

when you have a shower, use the jet of the shower and use it as a massage. Then if possible ask someone to rub in some olbas oil in as this will work better than any other muscular pain relief, mind that you don't use to much as it will sting. It will also smell as well, but it does work. Also if your having a bath, you can put some olbas oil in the bath and have a long relaxing soak.

As for your posture, all that I can suggest is that you put a board under the cushion where you like to sit, but round of the corners so you don't tare the the fabrics.

Also a full length board under the mattress for when you go to bed. It will feel strange at first, but

after a while you will find it really comfortable and will help you sleep better. Again round of the corners again so that you don't tare the bedding or mattress.

Let us know how you get on

Try Pilates. I found it helped a lot by improving posture and tightening core muscles.

Good luck

Hi Stu,

I have to agree with a lot of people here in that what got rid of my pain was focusing on my posture, not by trying to sit up straight, but through exercises.

A friend recommended a method called Egoscue and I've had no pain since.

Take care

Tom

Hi TomUK,  I had not heard of Egoscue before, just gave their website a quick look.  Great that it's working for you!

Do you go to classes or learn online/video?
