I fractured my hip a year ago and am still waiting for my thr. Over the past year my mobility has decreased, i cant put weight on my left bad hip and rely on crutches to walk anywhere. Did anyone else experience muscle pain before their surgery? I feel like theres a knife ripping down my thigh muscle every time i go to walk or move my leg. Does this pain go away after surgery or is it because my injury has stopped me from using the muscle properly and physio will help activate it again?
I couldn't move my hip at all before surgery and any attempt to meant a white hot knife ripping through my hip, front to back. I have, for various reasons, been mostly unable to walk for six months pre surgery, initially not entirely the hip, but mostly; and latterly all the hip. My pain went away immediately. The use of the muscle came back immediately, although not as strong right now, as it's only a week. But despite the difficulties I had my muscles were very strong - decades of judo had ensured that.
Everyone story is different, but you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If it doesn't come back immediately the physio will build it back, and I'll bet you'll be better after than you were before, no matter how weak it feels.
If you can get some physio before, that will help. But if nothing else, my physio recommends loads of buttock clenched whatever you are seated. They help build up the muscle without any pressure on the hip.
I have not suffered from a hip fracture.where was your fracture and I am very sorry to hear that bones heel quicker than tendons however I'm sure that no consolation for a hip fracture. OWWW, ! Are you in or out of the cast? That the worst part. Has the fracture heeled properly?
I have had THR. total hip replacement in Both hips. Sometimes there are many reasons for the type of pain you describe. Could be a back issue like a herniated disc, I have causing sciatica or from pinched nerve , or I Band impingment where I had tiny microscopic tears in my I band causing pain in the ligament that girdles the waist goes down the leg and around the knee.
Ask your our doctor if he can help diagnose by testing what is causing ur pain, thru testing and dr could advise treatment . It may be Physio therapy that could help get you back on track. It helped my pain tremendously. Not something we ever want to experience. The pain can be overwhelming.
I suffered from from terrible groin pain while waiting for my first THR revision. I have osteoarthritis in my hip joints. Once I had THR all the pain was gone and back to a better qualirpty of life.
Has the fracture heeled yet ? Would it be time to schedule a THR soon.
i feel for you living in pain every day its not only a challenge ever day but takes determination to break the ups and downs. Sometimes taking it slow with movement can be a daily issue. Ask your doc for meds too that can help you.
I havent had any surgery since I fractured my hip last year. Good old NHS taking their time getting me in for surgery. They have just thrown lots of pain killers at me and told me to be patient!
I was supposed to have my thr a year ago, but the NHS have cancelled my surgery many times (numerous different surgeons, all say they are understaffed or very busy etc). When they discovered a hair line fracture in my pelvis and left hip they xrayed and noticed osteoarthritis, no cast or anything, just given pain killers and a set of crutches and told to wait.
Im sure my waiting this long has resulted in degeneration of my muscles, I also suffer from chronic osteitis pubis and have significant inflammation of my adductor muscles, trying to do any physio usually results in tears in these muscles and im laid up for days with ice packs and lots of Naproxen. Basically my muscles dont like me :p
Hi Mishelle I also fractured my hip and pelvis on June 26th I didn't have any surgery because they said there wasn't a fracture, it was supposedly all soft tissue damage, by the time I was finally given xrays it was starting to heal so I have gone the conservative route and totally understand your pain does your Dr believe its all muscular, mine day the same.
I hope you can find relief in some way, I know I struggle some days more than others but I'm now 50% weight bearing but feel some pain then but not sure if its muscular or bone, I'm told that like you it is muscle pain, do you believe them.
I have had pain in my left hip for years. Then finally they realized how bad this is so now I get a THR. In the last few months it has steadily gotten worse. I have to use a walker to even go to the bathroom. It is so painful to even move and sleeping I have to be totally wiped out. They advised me to take as little pain killers as possible right now so after the surgery they will be more effective..I am actually managing pretty well without them just careful what I do and not much walking around
Perhaps it is time to be less patient? I know a number of times when people have only got treated because they started to complain. Patients have rights, and it seems that yours are being ignored. We all know that the NHS has problems. But wouldn't you be "very busy" if they weren't ingnoring your needs? You do have the right to complain via both PALS and the Clinical Commissioing Group - and if they can't resolve your problem they are obliged to pay for you to go private. A year is an unacceptable period of time to wait.
Omg. I would think under the circumstances you described that you should have be put in front on the line. Did they tell you how long the wait ?
Im not located in the UK Im in US where our health care is rated #18 in quality of health care compared to all the other nations. You would think it would be better.
Naproxin helps that good. I couldn't take it caused tummy issues for me one of the side effects.
I have heard others from the UK suggest if you could go to another area to see another specialist for another opinion. Perhaps have better treatment and schedule THR. Having to suffer IN pain every day because the line is long to get you in for surgery is really sad. I AM so sorry. Beleive me it's no fun.
let me know how your doing. Have you tried water therapy. It's gentle and water resistance helps build muscle and hot tub with jet help a lot. I get out and my legs turn into wet noodles. But it relaxes the muscles.
Have ver you checked with online exercises? Starting out slowly can help get you in better shape for pre op surgery better recovery and hopfully a better quality of life.
Pain in meds do help as many have unwanted side effects. Is there a patient advocate located in a major hospital you can speak with? ostelitis is painful and warm soak in Epsom salts helps me. I Also have pseudo tumors, erosion from metal on metal implant. And perivascular lymph nodes swelling and fluid build up cysts like in tissue. Also femeral osteolysis. I take Tylenol . I Walk like a penquin and use my collie dog To help me get up from low levels. She great.
for now get a reacher to pick things up from the floor or getting low things out of drawers cubbards kitchen etc. a toilet height extension so you sit up higher. It's a struggle sitting down low then getting back up.m
If you have a pet and must bend down to feed get a 12-18 high box to set food on in corner area .eliminate low bending . Try to avoid bending and twisting and no weight bearing. I don't even lift a gallon of milk only half gallons. But I am strong do exercises to be ready after Holidays for THR.
Mishelle finding what works for you that can cause less pain less aggravation the hip area is the ticket. Google online all the extra tools available to help make life a little easier thru this stage. Ask your doc for RX on these and you will not have to pay for them. Some area hospitals loan them out too!
How long has it been since THR ? If it's been longer than a year go in for a cat scan to me sure it's aligned properly .
When I had my first one 19 years ago after 8 months I has zero pain from bone on bone pain of osteoarthritis. Second one done 5 years ago.
Do you know what manufacturer your hip is. Zimmer, Stryker, BioMet,
Dupuy just to name a few. It may help to look up the make and model online . The information for your implant is on the OR report. Ring the office an ask if you need more info. Sometimes seeing the implant and reading about it can give information needed.
Also the UK has a joint registry to look up the success rate of the type of implant you have and on the surgeons.
We we are all different and I am so sorry to hear you are suffering. THR is supposed to improve quality of life. It has for many thousands across many nations.
