Just 3 days after he turned 3 I found out my son has Chiari 1... He complains about headaches once in a while but no other symptoms. From the report it says he has a herniation which measures 1.6 below the foremen magnum. I have yet to see his pediatrician in 2 weeks which will refer me to a specialist. Is that number bad and will affect his learning and memory?
Hi mayra34
I am sorry you have had this news about your son. I honestly cannot say if the number you are refering to is bad.
However I always remeber my neurosugen saying once that for me the damage of chairi malformation will only be seen through time. Treating younger kids are slightly luckier than adults because chairi may not have developed fully and caused further issues.
So for me there is two sides here. Him been diagnosed early has stopped the chairi getting worse. Therefore therefore there is a good chance that it won't affect his memory or learning.
I was diagnosed at 17 with type 2 Chairi. I am now 26 achieved a degree in psychology. In further education again and have taught to play the guitar for 12 years. So for me there weren't many issues regarding learning and memory.
Everyone is different though. So my advice is give it time and because he is young he can recover from ot better. Always listen to your neurosurgeon too.
I wish you all the best for the future.
Anything else you wish to ask me just say.
Take care
Jon
Thank you so much for responding. I want him to have a normal life as close as possible. Getting surgery after surgery is not something I am want him to go through especially because he's so little. But I am thankful we detected it soon and he seems to be learning and remembering things just fine, but he is still growing and and don't know what if it will affect him.
He has youth and time on his side
I am glad to hear his is doing well at the moment. Of course surgery is not something you want him to go trough. Unfortunately he must in order to the chairi getting worse.
Only time will tell I am afraid but find out early is a good for him. Apologies as good isn't the right word to use. I am not sure what word to use.
I am trying to say it's for the best that you find out now rather than later in his life. Again he has youth and time on his side ![]()
Please let me know how you get on.
Take care
Jon
