My daughters night terrors

Over the lkast few months my daughter has been waking in teh night sweating screaming and cryinbg with a look of absolute terror in her eyes. She is 9 yrs old . I thought initially that she was haveing a nightmare but over the last week this has occured everynight approx 1hr after she has fallen asleep.

The sight of her doing this is very upsetting and i feel so helpless. I attended the local doctor who advised me what she is experiencing is night terrors . Which now makes alot more sense due to the behavior it leads too.

I would like to talk to other parents who have similar experiences

A worried Mum

Hi There, Just read your question and wondered how your daughter is, I see it was 2008 so a while back now. Did she grow out of them? My son is 4 (5 in April). He has been having night terrors since just before he was 2. We had a period of about 6 months where they stopped but they are back now and to me they seem worse. Two weeks ago he pee'd on me, he was that terrified. He now shakes really bad while he's having them as well.

I just read tonight that there could be links with larger tonsils ? I don't know if there is any truth to that or not. I really want advice/help/steered in the right direction as i feel helpless. I know he has no recollection of having a terror, which I take comfort from but it is still very distressing to see. We have them pretty much every night now. I used to wake him up after 1hr 15 mins to try and bypass the terror, which worked really well to start with but now they may start earlier, catching me off guard.

Hope you can shed some light.

Thanks

J

Hi J

My daughter too has night terrors. She started with them when she was 3 and they seem to have escalated to the point were we saw a consultant today. She's now 6 and has 2/3 terrors a week.

The consultant was very helpful but unfortunately can't offer a cure, we just have to wait until she grows out of them at around age 11. Lots of good advice about keeping her safe and secure and avoiding caffeinated drinks; make sure she goes the toilet before going to bed.

She is completely unaware of them and they aren't affecting her day to day so it's just Mummy and Daddy that seem to have sleep deprivation ;-)

Hope your son is ok.

Thanks for replying, funny it comes on the day I spoke to my Dr about it. He is referring my son to the Adolescent Mental Health service to see if they can help us. Leo has had them every night this week, last night and tonights were massive and lasted about 10 mins. Fingers crossed they can offer some sort of help. If it's anything useful I'll let you know.

Thanks again and I hope your daughter is ok.
