My IBS seems to be getting worse

I have always had Ibs flare ups. I can you 6 - 8 times a morning

Last Wednesday I thought I was getting a cold . We were building up to celebrating our 25 th wedding anniversary and I did not want to be ill

So I took a cocktail of cold remedies and sucked catarrh pastilles all day ( I can't eat gluten)

Well I had the most horrendous violent runs all night

Since then I have gone from been ok to massive 6 times attacks of violent runs. I feel I can't eat and am getting really anxious. I had an attack for 3 hours this morning finishing with uncontrollable runs

I have always had ibs but not like this. It's the violent watery runs that is frightening and awful pain before.

I am wondering if I am still suffering the affects of last week?

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received as I am wondering if I have triggered an upgraded IBS that is here to stay

Thankyou

Dear karen,

I really do feel that the low FODMAP diet would help you. It cannot do you any harm when you consider the problems you are having, it has certainly improved things for me and you seem to be suffering badly.

Just google low FODMAP diet and see what you think.

Best regards

Robert

Thank you. I will do that!

Dear karen,

It's me again, I would like to know what cold remedies you took but this week end I had a bit of a cold so I took Beechams cold &flu and Voltarol Pain-eze and got the runs the same as you. I was a bit surprised because I normally have control of this sort of thing. When I read the ingredients on the back of the packet I suddenly saw the problen. They both contain sucrose which is common sugar C12 H22 O11. This is guaranteed to cause a flare up with IBS sufferers. Sucrose causes enormous disruption in our bowels because it feeds bad bacteria and causes an inbalance thich results in diarrhoea for you and me.

Please check the cold remedies you took and see if they contain sucrose or sorbital.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Robert

I took about 6 boots cattarh pastilles over the day. Some nasal drops. A vitamin c tablet and echinechia and some cordial juice which I never usually have. So maybe the pastilles. I was just surprised after major first attack I kept having one every 2 / 3 days.

It all seems to have calmed down but I did take half an immodium.

Hope you feel better
