My sister is having the new type of hip replacement

The Dr said they wont have to cut through any muscles or nerves becasue they will make the incision in the crease of her leg by her groin.  Has anyone had this type of hip replacement?  how long should she expect to be in the hospital and will they really have her up and walking with a walker the dame day?

i appreciate any responses.. thank you so much,

Jenny

Never heard of that   Minimally Invasive Anterior Total Hip Joint Replacement. The anterior approach is an approach to the front of the hip joint as opposed to a lateral (side) approach to the hip or posterior (back) approach. the best one here is the anterior does not cut through; had two in last year up walking day of surgery:

Hi there never heard of this do you mean the

anterior approach? She will be up the following

day I'm 10 weeks post op, post approach have to say operation much easier than I thought recovery

is where the hard work starts. wishing your sis

good thoughts and hugs her life is only going

to get better all that pain gone 😥 😅 xxx

hi jenny,

your sister is lucky to have this kind of approach - small incision, no cutting of muscles, tendons etc. -

I had 2 THR surgeries, posterior approach, and was out of a couple of hours post-op and took a couple of steps - I was full weight bearing ...

so yeah, true in most cases -

hospital stay depends - anywhere from 2 - 5 days -

when is her surgery scheduled ... maybe you can have her join this wonderful forum ?

big warm hug to both of you

renee

I think the anterior approach is much more common in the US & possibly done privately in the UK but haven't heard of anyone having it done on the NHS here.  Is your sister in the UK ?

Jenny, don't know about going through the groin but recovery should be similar to anterior procedure. Yes, up and walking same day. Rehab of muscles is the challenge she will be facing. I am 3 weeks post op. Spent 3 days in hospital and discharged home. First hurdle for me was to be able to lift my leg to get into bed. Perhaps with the groin approach there won't be the stretching of muscles that I had to deal with? Currently I am going to Physical Therapy 2x a week. I am able to walk unassisted and can go up and down stairs normally, no hand rails. I even played 3 games (not at my normal intense level though) of Pickleball (Google it.)  - of course I would never tell my husband or my doctor this! I'm sure your sister will be very pleased with her THR - no pain is always a good thing. Looking forward to hearing from her on this forum - Trish

This is a minimally invasive approach. It consists of an incision in the groin of max three inches and a small one in the buttocks max two inches. It tends to be used on younger fitter people.
