My son is 6 and has had persistent glue ear for at least a year. As with lots of children with this condition his hearing worsens during and after a cold.

When he was a baby he had an allergic reaction to cows milk, ie vomiting. I replaced it with soya milk and he improved. When I reintroduced cows milk, his eczema gradually worsened, so I cut out wheat and dairy for 3 months, which cured the eczema.

Since then he has had only a little milk, until starting school where he drinks it daily. I'm now thinking that his glue ear started soon after he started school. I may be clutching at straws but will try to cut out dairy again, in the absence of any other help available.

I would love to know if there are any exercises people use to help their children to concentrate when they are disappearing into their own little worlds due to diminished hearing.

Have you tried Omega 3 fish oil? It really helped my daughters concentration. She has just been diagnosed with glue ear which I think she has had for years but there you go. Its worth a try, and cut out the cows milk again as it is mucus producing.

My 4 and a half year old daughter has glue ear, she has never had an ear infection in her life! She had grommetts inserted in November 2005, having failed at least six hearing tests in the 18 months prior, Just wanted to say cutting out dairy is a good idea although i doubt it will improve the hearing drastically, as my daughter also suffers from Eoesinophilliac Colitis, and has been egg and dairy free for the past 18 Months, it made no difference to her hearing at all, although i must say it has definately improved her behaviour! The grommetts have been good her hearing is better although still not perfect. Good luck.
