My spouse is a 40 year old hard working man, never stops...Recently I've notice a huge change in him Major weight loss, shakes, sweating, tremors, anxiety and panic attacks, blurred vision, dizzy, nausea ... I'm just so sad...he can't do anything anymore of his regular routine because of this and he also is sad and losing his mind not knowing what is going with his own body and it's getting worse and it's very difficult for me to see him this way. Since we found out that it was an overactive thyroid, we were thinking it's not that bad we will have his doctor help him and it will be fine but we are still in waiting on that...Does anyone have anything encouraging to set our minds at ease about this...We don't know what we can do while we are waiting for anyone to call us back....PLEASE I'm desperate to make my spouse feel at ease here....anything, any suggestions would be very much appreciate. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Mel
Hi,
I`m sorry to here about your Partner,
i was Diagnosed with underactive early last year, i put on on about 3 stone with 20 inch waist, the medication was helping, and when i thought this was my last Blood test, the Results came back saying that its gone over this time, atleast i will loose some weight,
i`m going to The Christie`s next week to have Radioiodine for my Thyrotoxicosis,
it kills most of your Thyroid, this is instead of having an opperation, but i will be on Medication for the rest of my life but aleast it will be sorted out,
my advise is to push your GP to see a specialist, i`ve been lucky so far, some people have been suffering years before they do somthing.
all the best.
I started having hyperthyroid symptoms 5 years ago - exactly as you mention. I lost 10kg in 3 weeks and I couldn't find a doctor who would listen to me. I think because I am female they just decided on panic disorder. It took 3 years to find a good endocrinologist who ran the uptake tests and scans to get a diagnosis on thyroiditis and multi nodular goiter. The symptoms are very frightening and I feel like I have been through a living hell. I was put on beta blackers and Propylthiouracil PTU (allergic to Carbimazole) just over 2 years ago and although I am clinically euthyroid, I still get the hyper symptoms. I haven't driven since this happened as my vision is blurred and I get dizzy, anxious and feel faint. I also get a lot of chest pain and muscular pain around my body.
Keep bugging the doctors for help, don't let them just keep you hanging around waiting for tests. My thyroid doesn't seem to be responding well to the medication and I don't want to lose any more of my life to this illness. Although it scares the hell out of me I am booked in for a total thyroidectomy in December.
Mine was a weird case as I was healthy until I was give a steroid shot for allergies. The steroid caused an anaphylactoid reaction within 15 mins of being injected. I was also put on a course of Cipro antibiotics at the same time as the steroid and ended up like this.
Your husband needs lots of support and will need to talk a lot about what is happening to him. He will be feeling very scared especially if like me he is used to being a strong in control person, because he cannot control the symptoms hyperthyroidism brings.
I was eventually diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism ( overactive thyroid) about 15 years ago. Before that, I thought I was going mad, walking the streets in the early hours because my brain wouldn't slow down and all the sympoms associated with the disease. The GPs ignored all the symptoms for about 18 months. I eventually diagnosed myself via the internet.
The treatments will eventually sort your husband out and he will recover but it will take time for the right level of medication to be arrived at. Insist your husband sees a thyroid specialist if the Carbimazole doesn't control it.
I had to have radioactive Iodine to kill off the thyroid and now I'm on 125mg of Thyroxine as I am now hypothyroid and this may be your husbands path to get his life back. Tell him it will get better.
For the last 6 months I have been having twitching calf muscles and hypersensitivity of the nerves and skin. The doctors say I'm stressed or just anxious and they have ignored it. Yesterday in desperation I halved my dose of thyroxine and the twitching has stopped despite the GP saying my levels of thyroxine are ok.
Has anyone else had this side effect with thyroxine or am I just clutching at straws? Any help would be appreciated.
