My Supra Pubic open simple prostatectomy was on May 2, 2018. I saw my urologist today for a follow up on my progress post surgery. Today is June 21, 2018. I healed up nicely. NO INCONTINENCE and NO ERECTION PROBLEMS.I got rid of my urine pads for good. I do have retro-ejactulation just has he said that I would. I now can pee about 20 oz at a time. I am very happy with the surgery. One amazing benefit from surgery is that my blood pressure has drastically dropped from about 165-180/100-110 to 126/73. This lower pressure was observed as of the day of surgery. Apparently the urine was backing up into the bladder, up the ureters and up into the kidneys. The kidneys sensed that there was a problem down below with the urine flow and the kidney's upped my BP to compensate. Anyway, I am grateful that have normal blood pressure now thanks to surgery. If any of you have any questions for me feel free to ask.

That's great news both on the prostadectomy and blood pressure. Did you hydronephrosis prior to the surgery? That's water backing up into the kidneys and would show up on a bladder/kidney ultrasound. I was hoping my bp would drop like yours when I started self cathing but it turned out retention was not the issue.

I had the procedure done because my prostate was 263 grams and I could not pee AT ALL. When he did the biopsy it showed only 5% of the prostate had gleason 7 (3=4) GRADE 2. He said that if I had a biopsy prior to surgery they probably never would have found that small of an area of cancer. He said that he will monitor my PSA every 3 months. I may have to deal with radiation down the road. In retrospect I wish that he had removed the whole damn thing.
It's funny you mention hydronephrosis as I was just googling it. I truly believe that is what I had. When I was first cathed I produced 1600cc's or 1800cc's (I can't remember which). I lived for decades with hypertension because I could not tolerate any bp meds. I am just grateful that this has happened to me.

Were you on a program of self catherization (CIC) prior to the prostadectomy and if so, for how long, and how many times a day did you cath? I ask, because if refluxed urine was causing your high bp, then you should have gotten your bonus bp drop from CIC alone as opposed to only seeing the bp drop after the surgery.

So how much did he get ridge of Did he take out the part that had the tumor and did he know what type it was Slow growing or aggressive. You may have not had a problem for a while but you did have a large prostate. It may have been best. But you are doing great Ken
I never did a self cath. The doc said it would not work for me. My prostate was 3.5 inches from top to bottom.

No you don't - your results regarding continence and impotence wouldn't be the same for sure now and maybe ever. And be wary of treating any cancer unless the gleason score pops - 95% of all of em don't need treatment and with a low gleason score its over 98%. Glad it worked well.
What Old Buzzard said. Don't treat for prostate cancer before you consult with at least three specialists because over treatment can often be more of a problem then under treatment.

The lab report said that they rec'd about 160 grams of prostate "meat." What he took out had the tumor. I had incontinence BEFORE surgery and NONE after. I was getting ERECTIONS the day I left the hospital . I was going thru old medical records and apparently when I was 54 I had a 104 gram prostate which grew to 263 grams in 14 years.
I definitely planned to get other opinions if my doc suggests radiation. I got other opinions before consenting to surgery. THE BIG THING IS MY VERY DRASTIC DROP IN BLOOD PRESSURE SINCE FIRST DAY OF SURGERY.
If I was you if he got the tumor and everything came out fine I would not do anything thing else. Why mess up a good thing Just keep a eye on everything Ken
So what I get is that you are one of the men that there prostate grows fast. If they got the tumor out and they most likely took out the seminal vessel and some some of the lymph nodes and it did not go out side of the prostate. You should be fine. Did you get any of the test back from the stuff they took out. One thing I would like to know was Was the cancer slow growing or fast. Did they give you that information. It seam you are doing very well with the out come. But being your prostate grows you may need another procedure in 10 years or so. Get other information before you have anything else done Good health to you Ken.
The cath would not have been long enough. The foley cath which is only one size for adults was right up against the penis where the "y" part was at the end. I could not sit upright with it in me. Very uncomfortable.
You would think they would have had a longer catheter. I think they do make one. That is very odd Ken
