My unoperated hip now very painful. How long between operations is adviseable

Hi

6 weeks on with operated hip.  This hip is very good and driving now and walking unaided.  just need a stick for security occasionally. However my other hip (which I know needs an operation too) has really got painful. the damp weather probably didnt help but didnt expect it to be as bad as this. Its nearly as bad as the one I had operated on now. I had my left hip operation 1st June 2015.  How long before the other can be done do you think?

maggie

The timing of the operation is up to you and your doctor... I was lucky and had both done on the same day --- Jan 27th....  almost 6 months out and I feel great,  -- I went back to work after 6 weeks, did take it easy and followed all the directions of my physical therapist

hi

that sounds impressive. 2 together sounds a great achievement.

My unoperated hip is strong and recovering well.  Consultant said

its up to me but suggested sooner rather than later but just wondered how others coped.  You seem to have had no problem at all.

thanks maggie

oh maggie ... I am right there with you ... at 7  weeks post op I had my follow up visit with the surgeon - xray showed that other hip's cartilage had detoriated rapidly in 6 months time -  I think Deborah is right - it is up to the surgeon and you - have you had your follow up visit yet?

warm hug and take care

Hi Maggie

I am in the same situation as you. But my hip has collapsed since having the left one done. I asked this question to my surgeon and he said you will have to wait at least 3 months ( 12 weeks ) before he would even attempt the second hip. I would phone your surgeons secretary and let her know that you are in pain as soon as you can so you won't be waiting too long and your surgeon may also want to take x rays.

I really do sympathise with you I know how bad the pain can be, I hope you get sorted out soon x

When I saw my surgeon last week for my 6 week check, he said I needed to see my own GP and get referred back to him for my right hip. He can't just do it without the referral.

hi hailea

thanks.  sorry to hear your hip collapsed.  Mine was bad yesterday but better today but is going the way of the first one unfortunately. My consultant did say to book in 8 weeks notice but wondered how long everyone recommended in between.  will speak to the secretary tomorrow when going for physio. thanks a lot. maggie

hi gill

the consultant has told me to book the operation through his secretary as he have already seen him to confirm the second operation but just wanted to know how comfortable everyone else was with how long in between.  I can get it done in October so may go for that now.

thanks very much. maggie

I would say as soon as you can that's what I'll be going for. xx

yes surgeon said I would need doing asap and am down for october provisionally at the moment but just wanted to know if that was comfortable enough gap from other people.  but thinking I will go ahead with october now.  better over and done with. sorry to hear yours same renee and hope you sort yours out too soon. thanks maggie x

hi gill

yes thinking will be october and hoping yours is soon too.

we can monitor each other on the second one!

No problem maggie.

It isn't what we recomend it is up to your surgeon. Every surgeon is different same as every hospitals care after you have had the op done.

Hope you won't be long waiting. I have to wait till September now at least. Main thing is my surgeon knows I am in a bad way.

Oh Maggie, I can so empathise with you, I had mine done back in nov. and all was great for a while, then the other hip ( which I knew needed done aswell) staring hurting, well here i am waiting for my date, the unoperated hip is now far worse than the other one was post opp. I wanted them both done at the same time, no chance! so I've had my pre opp. It's jst the waiting game now, so in answer to your question, everyone is different, and your surgeon will advise you when to get the other one done, but I would get it done asap, before the pain gets too bad, as like me you will be putting too much strain on the new hip, good luck,

Love .

Lynne.

hy lynne

yes thought my unoperated hip might hold out a bit but think like you

having the first one done takes the strain on it and suddenly this week it was very painful and yes agree feels worse than the other one was pre op.  Anyway hopefully we will both get done soon and be back to nearly normal.

Hi Maggie, I am now 8 weeks post operation 16 may I had my right one replaced, just been today, and am slated for 23 july for my left, that is now so so painfull, guess it is up to the surgeon, and yourself....Ian.

Hi Ian

thanks hopefully sorting out tomorrow a date.

You are not far off now for your second one. Good luck and let us know how it all goes.

Maggie

good evening ...

well, it looks like there will be a lot of us having their 2nd THR surgery in the coming week/months -  I am so grateful to have you as my friends and support group ... it feels a lot less lonely compared to the 1st one -

wishing you a good night with hours o uninterrupted and painfree sleep ..

warm hug

Hi Renee

yes we can all compare progress and at least with second one we are now not going into the unknown. We have experienced the progress of first hip so will hold us in good stead for second one. Good night and sleep well too. Maggie

Sometimes the unknown is perhaps a bit better, cos we know the lows to expect too lol. but with all the friends and support on here we will get over them for the second time...xx
