Has anyone had any experience with deep muscle manipulation therapy known as myofacial therapy?
At the onset of my symptoms, I had such treatment. It seemed to help but the effects didn't last long. The treatment is painful but the goal is to release knotted up muscles.
Recently I had a session hoping to clear up the muscles in my leg that were making me limp so badly that I was about to use a cane. Then I got a new rheumatologist, diagnosis & prednisone. I'm pretty sure the meds cleared up the leg problem. Thoughts?
Try Bowen Technique, it is painless and it has helped so many people.
Without it I would still be using a zimmer frame and walking stick. I only wish I had listened to Eileen earlier.
Yes it is not cheap, but you only have to have three sessions and if it does not work by then, it is not for you and what is more the practioners tell you.
I used to be athletic and have those wonderful painful deep tissue massages. Those as I understand are good for muscles in spasm, that are not mobile.
When I researched PMR and inflammation, I understood that inflamation tears down the fiber I'll say then rebuilds stronger. An area becomes inflammed due to something not right so the body can self heal.
PMR feels in our joints or bursa which is not really a massagable area.
Search the Bowen method, you'll find good info. I saw someone listed in my area and I might consider it, but if just temporary then not sure I want to spend money. I'm having to pay physical therapist out of my pocket already!
however, massage in muscles good for blood circulation, so a lighter touch would be nice,
Thanks, Layne. I'm thinking that the myofacial therapy isn't what I need because it is too invasive. AND I know what you mean about all these extra treatments that are not covered by health insurance.
It was not temporary for me, three sessions initially, then two, once a fortnight, then one a month for three months and then one every six months and now I just go when I feel I need a boost. I will probably do it for the rest of my life, it makes such a difference.
Hi Karen; I've had this treatment, and if provided by "someone who actually knows how to do the treatment....and I've only found one in the physio practice where I go, although others have tried"...it is Very good....what I found was when "done properly/accurately, it released the knotted ligaments, and lasted for quite some time, and saved me from the pain in shoulder/neck/jaw pain....but, sadly, this physio is soooo good, that everyone wants to see her, so is very hard to get treatment by her, on a regular basis....she is also the Only one, who was able to relaease my TMJ by correct technique.....if you feel the therapist is good at this procedure, I would really recommend it...............Bron
The myofacial therapist I have seen is one of the very best according to my husband who has knotted up muscles from heart surgery procedures and bad reactions to statin drugs.
My experience however is that for me the effects of the treatment didn't last more than an hour or so and it wore me out. Acupuncture gave me longer lasting relief.
I'm guessing the myofacial didn't get the blood flow working for me as well as the acupuncture.
