Myomectomy versus Hysterectomy

Hi

I discovered last summer that I had a very large fibroid 16cm by 12cm and have been struggling ever since to choose a treatment option. Don't seem to have any symptoms apart from a big tummy and people asking me if I am pregnant which is what made me go to the doctor in the first place. My gynacologist does not think it is a good idea to leave it so I am struggling with choosing between a hysterectomy or myomectomy. I am 42 and have no children. Not keen on having a hysterectomy. Does anyone out there have any experience of having a myomectomy for such a large fibroid? (I understand that I would have to have hormone injections to try and reduce the size). Any help/advice greatly appreciated as I am finding this very hard.

Hi,

I currently have a 15cm fibroid, and have my final pre-op tomorrow (3/01) before my actual myomectomy operation. Unfortunately, my Gynaecologist told me that providing me with medication to try and shrink the size of my fibroid would be a waste of time because if you have a larger fibroid, the medication will only shrink it by a matter of CMs, if anything which means you will still have a large Fibroid. I was told this was an option, but not for myself due to the size of mine. And to be quite honest, I really did not want to waste another 3 months taking this medication and carrying this lump around with me, just to be told the medication had only shrunk the fibroid slightly and that an operation was still required. There are many options available, as my Gynaecologist provided me with a list of them all even though I only had the option of either a hysterectomy or myomectomy, however I would speak to your Gynaecologist as they know what options are available for yourself knowing your symptoms and size/placement of your fibroid.

If you can get away with not having a hysterectomy, I would go down this route and stick with the myomectomy, as you know that the fibroid will be removed this way and that you get to keep all your lady parts. However, definitely get the options available to you by your Gynaecologist, and remember it is your decision.

Hope all goes well smile

I've got several fibroids ranging from 5cm to 14cm and polyps. I've been given just hysterectomy or do nothing as the options as I've 2 kids and premenopausal. I started on zoladex hormone implants 4 weeks ago so have 2 more months before consultant review. The side effects of the implants are just coming out and now I don't know what to expect. I work full time and today is the first time I've ever felt like I cannot go to work as I've the worst headache, I itch and sweat and I've had inset if severe backache and trapped nerve feeling down right side.
