Naproxen and stomach ache

Have been taking naproxen for about 2 weeks for pain management and most of the time it takes the edge of things.

I've been taking 500mg twice a day always after food but I'm getting stomach aches and nausea.

My dr is on holiday till Monday and don't really want to talk to another dr.

Just wondered if anyone had any advice

My doc gave me an anti sickness pill that lines your stomach to slow the naproxen down.

I found that Ibruprofen retard 800mg helped but the doctors took me off it because of other complications.

It can tear your stomach apart!!! I ended up with leaky gut and can't take or digest a lot of pills from high doses of NSAIDS....even years later. Be careful.

Try lower doses more times thru the day if you can.

Omega 3s & Grape Seed oil or supplements help a lot with inflammation. Sugar increases inflammation....big time!!!

There are a lot of natural ways to help. Inflammation fighting foods or even a whole diet.

When you read the packet insert that's one of the side effects. They can cause stomach ulcers. Some doctors give you a PPI to protect the stomach. Naproxen can also effect the way other medications you are taking work.

If you are taking other meds you can go to RxList enter them and check for any warnings.

Hi, have you tried asking your pharmacist for advice? They can be very helpful and are very knowledgeable about medication combinations and side effects, although I know from experience that sickness and nausea are side effects of naproxen. Your Gp can prescribe something like omeprazole or lansoprazole which line your stomach to reduce the harmful effects of the naproxen.

good luck

My biggest advice is degylcerrized licorice (dgl) for stomach lining protection....it is NOT a drug....but a supplement...it saves my stomach....check it out.

I don't take naproxen as for one thing it does elevate blood pressure more than the others....I take ibuprofen 4 per day and pain rx supplement pain med in between.

I ended up with stomach ulcer and in the ER with a pharma anti inflammatory in the 1980;s so I've been burned....and do MOST of my health care with supplements....and a otc pain ibuprofen.    Would not be without dgl.... .

Thanks for your advice, have stopped taking the naproxen until I feel better.

Am taking omega 3 along with some other vitamins and trying to eat better. Am also taking some omeprazole to help my stomach settle seems to be working

Do your research on DGL, it's saving me....very unknown to MOST, it's a stomach lining tamer/protector.,.....not a drug but a licorice supplement....

Hi,

I've been taking Naproxen for some time now.......same dose as you.

All doctors should prescribe omneprozol or lansoprozol {spelling?] stomach liner, if they dont you should ask for them.  I did with my previous GP.

Always take them with or after food as well as that.

There not as bad as some people make out as long as you have to stomach liner

I've had some omeprazole today that I brought over the counter grumbly tummy but seems more settled

I don't know your product but it's probably something like the little purple pill here people live on which has a long list of side effects...best to work with a more natural herbal like licorice to keep stomach in good shape.... our pharmacies have tons of stomach anti acids but they all come with lists of side effects.....

Take one thing for one thing and end up with more grief...  not the case with dgl.

Oh I bought this anti acid drug and the box is collecting dust since I started on DGL a couple yrs ago.....yes, a good long list of possible side effects on the box itself.   To cut some acid in your tummy, a 1/4 tsp or less of baking sode in a 1/2 glass water can do a good job....also add some baking soda to some of your acidic foods you eat...

I drink two cups of organic coffee per day and add cinammon and a smidge of baking soda to the grounds for each cup as coffee is acidic...

Work to keep alkaline in general.   carbs and sugar create acidic bodies....

DGL is a stomach lining protection, protects against reflux, gerd, protects against ulcers.....etc...

Hi Arual

Are you in the US?   I dont think we can buy it over the counter here

Its the sort of thing you have to take regularly.....not just if you have stomach pains......its more prevention than cure

I hope your tummy does settle down

Hi Joy

Omneprozal is not an antacid drug.

Its a stomach protector.......lines the stomach and protects against anti inflammatories in particular....I'm sure other things as well.

We cant buyit over the counter in the UK as far as I know so its on prescription and things like that are monitored pretty well by our GP's

Oh, the one I have right here is Omeprazole, delayed release tablet 20mg acid reducer....I have an unopened box as I take the DGL which is not a drug....I prefer supps over the drugs...   Perhaps your and the US is similar but different names..

Whatever works and does least harm......I'm all for that.  J

So glad! Taking NSAIDs sometimes is okay. But you're preventing yourself from having life long issues. Awesome!

I forgot to tell you...probiotics. They are a life saver for my belly, especially overnight. With trillions of bacteria in our guts, billions a day via probiotics doesn't seem like much. All I know is, they help.

Hi I'm in the uk, you can get it over the medicines counter a boots, it's branded for acid reflux... Seems to have worked

Slippery Elm helps coat mucous membranes.

Unfortunately, I wasn't warned or given tools to combat NSAID issues. Years later, 1000% healthier, way more educated & still can't take even a multivitamin without vomiting for hours. So I'm biased.

I have a friend that I've been preaching alternative support for years, she does not listen.....she just called me she is sick with stomach stuff and blaming whole foods market for some stuff she ate.....I never get sick but I am faithful with:   probiotics, super digestive enzymes and DGL.....

I get upset with her as she does not listen, runs to her doc, they know nothing but drugs, and I said Rachel, I've been trying to get you on the right track for years and  you don't listen.....      She is addicted to running to her doc ...... I'm screaming.....   J

I'm SO going to check that out!
