Hi there. This is my first posting and its on behalf of my hubby who had his operation 4 days ago. This was done with spinal injection and sedation. The problem is he has been nauseous, dizzy and sickly ever since. They have given anti sickness tablets and 2 injections but still feels ill. He is also convinced the pain killers are causing it too so has stopped taking them. He said he can cope with the pain but not the sickness. He is coming home tomorrow and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this. Also and remedies that can help. Many thanks.
Hi Pauline. Sorry to hear about your husband' s nausea. I had my op Saturday, spinal and sedation. On Sunday night I felt really sick al night and was given anti sickness tablet which helped but although I am eating ok I have not got much of appetite. I do think the painkillers make you feel sicky. Sorry. I haven't got any remedies to help but obviously keep drinking water. Do hope it passes soon. Let me know how he gets on
Pauline, I feel for your husband....I had exactly the same problem, they tried everything but I felt I had stomach poisioning....they finally took away the morphine drip and gave me the same meds they give to chemo patients, but it still took 2 full days until I could eat, drink or move....I'm hopefull now that they have removed his morphine he will start to feel better...once home you can give him dry toast, clear broth, etc. (but keep in mind for him to drink tons of water, eats prunes or prune juice as constipation is the next big hurdle to overcome) (not to mention sleep) Sorry for being such a downer but I think, bearing any medical complications, these are the most common side effects......
Thank you Linda and Patricia - it's comforting to know that you have been through the same thing. I have been looking at remedies and ginger tea or any variation of ginger seems to be helpful. I hope your recovery continues well Linda and thanks again to both of you.
Yes I was not sick from anesthesia but violently sick from pain relief.if he can try to come off all pain relief...... Just take paracetamol. Then try some protein drink s such as fortasip .Don't bother with antisickness. His system needs to be reset . This happened to me vomiting for 8 days post surgery. Also when reintroducing food do it slowly..... Toast tea dry biscuits : no fruit and vegetables keep it si plain . Regard Lara

Oh forgot to mention zofran May help.
Hi Pauline
So sorry to hear how bad your husband is still feeling.
I'm 3 weeks post the op (same anaesthetic as your husband) and I was very sick at one point due to the Morphine it also made my skin itchThey had given me anti-sickness tablets but unfortunately I couldn't keep them down so they gave me an injection instead and that did the trick. I didn't feel like eating not only because of the nausea but also constipation and they won't let u go home until you have "been". Its very difficult when you have been so sick to start eating again as you are nervous that you will be sick again. Im concerned if he isn't taking any pain relief as might the pain also be making him feel nauseous? If you can try to speak to his consultant before he is discharged to ask what can be done to help him while he is recuperating at home. Hope he will be feeling better soon so he can concentrate on recovering from his op. Let us know how he gets on.
You really seem to have been through the mill Lara, thanks for the advice about the reintroduction of food. I will get some protein drinks for him in the meantime.
Hi Linnet - looks like this is.much more common than I originally thought. To be honest I didn't think it could be pain meds but it seems he was right. He has had some pretty nasty things in the past so I know he had an ability to cope with pain. He said he would take paracetamol at home. He gets Lactulose on a repeat script so think he'll be making good use of that. He's diabetic too so we have to keep an eye on that too. I hope at 3 weeks post open you are looking back and thinking it was all worth it. He has another hip operation to go and a knee replacement - although at the moment he's thinking he won't bother. Hope he changes his mind.
Hi Pauline as your husband is diabetic that obviously adds to the issue of being sick. I'm sure he must feel down at the moment but I'm sure once you get him home he will start to feel much better. I am feeling better every day and stronger with exercises and walking. I am going to have my other hip done too in about six months time and although I can think of more pleasant experiences to repeat I will def have it done. Once he is on the mend and starts to feel the benefit of his new hip I'm sure will look at things differently. Hope he will soon be feeling much better. Hope you are ok too as it must have been worrying for you?
I didn't suffer with sickness at all, but a lady who was in the opposite bed to me had it very badly. Your husband should be okay on just paracetamol which usually has no other bad effects as it is simply a painkiller. If he has been given dispersible aspirin as well, then he should really keep taking those, but only after he has had something to eat first. Dry toast is good and I am told bananas are also good as they contain potassium and to drink lots of water. Hope he soon feels a lot better.
No problem Pauline. It will pass but feel s like forever at the time good luck.
Is it co codamol he is taking? Even a small quantity makes me feel sick. However I can take high doses of tramadol without any nausea at all. He may be the same. Suffering pain is not good for him so ask your gp to try another drug.
Thanks for the advice and good wishes Barbara - I'm sure he will be glad it was done in a couple of weeks.
Glad to see it didn't put you off having the other one done. Quality of life will win out in the end. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Juliette - yes it is. He has Tramadol at home so that might be an option but to be honest I think he will opt for the paracetamol as it seems the least offensive. He is very good with pain but not feeling sick all the time. Good job he never had 3 months of morning sickness ;0)
It amazes me that some people don't have much pain and can manage on paracetamol which is useless for severe pain. I remember a staff nurse telling me that she didn't agree with all these opiates and would I try intravenous paracetamol? I remember thinking what the hell is she going on about! Did nothing. I needed eight tramadol a day and gradually reduced them as I recovered. I have had a baby at home without pain relief but after a caesarean I was in agony. So we are all different at different times. But there is no need to suffer. No medals coming in the post.
Your quite right Patricia..
Im 6days post op and had terrible constipation for two days,in fact I think it's impaction which is serious and can need hospitalisation.
Wothout going into graphic detail I managed to clear it myself..Sitting on the loo with constipation for an hour or more with a new hip is agony.
Im now on a similar diet to yours ie prunes, plums, pears, muesli, broccoli and clear soups.
After having had constipation it can't be overstated the need for a high fibre after THR..I knew about it but didn't listen.its been a hard lesson if you'll excuse the pun.
Totally agree with you Juliette. I have a friend who had the same op as me just over a year ago and she had practically no pain either before or after the op. I on the other hand am three weeks post op and still take paracetamol and tramadol for the pain. Especially need it as the exercises get harder and am trying to walk as much as possible without crutches. The Physio and the doctors also said take the pain refief YOU need - there are no medals for suffering!
