Nausea and Upset Stomach

Hey, all. I started Prozac last Tuesday. I started getting very bad nausea Friday night. It was also very bad last night. I get it basically every night, have it right now. It prevents me from sleeping. Also, my stomach is very sensitive, I have not had completely solid stool for days. When does this ease up? I started at 20 mg every 2 days and dr. said to change it to every 3 days.

Why every 2 or 3 days ? It’s supposed to be taken every day normally

He said every 2 days on 20mg is like taking 10mg per day.

Jeff try to take it with food, at least some crackers or cereal, I started 4 days with 10mg, then I will do 20mg then 40mg, but I think the nausea is because you're not eating solids, hope you feel better soon.

Jeff-is this Dr your primary care physician or a psychiatrist?   This does not sound right at all.   They make 10 mg pills  to be taken everyday then you can bump up to 20.   Hopefully you are under the care of a psychiatrist.  They are the experts in these meds.

Well that’s good but I’ve never heard it done like this.  You will definitely have a few weeks of nausea & loose stools but keep in touch with your Dr if it’s unbearable. 

Best of luck to you. Prozac is a great drug.  Just wish the doc would give you 5 or 10 mgs to be taken everyday & then bump you up to 20 gradually.

I have heard it has really worked for some people. He said if it gets unbearable to get in sooner to switch meds. I am gonna try to tough it out, hopefully it improves.

I was on Prozac & stayed on 20 mgs for like 15 years.  It treated me great.  Life was good!  Best of luck to you.   Yeah stick with it if you can. It’ll be worth it.

I have never heard of taking it meds every other day. I started on 20mg and have stayed on that dose for nearly 3 years. It does take a while to kick in. I had nausea for the first few weeks, just had no appetite. Keep taking them and in time you will feel better.

I took it this morning and now I am just extremely drowsy.

Hi Jeff. I started on 10 mg daily and had loose stools and nausea from week 4 through week 6. My doc also told me to start taking the 10 mg every other day in order to equal out to 5 mg daily.  Since I decreased to the 10 mg every other day, the side effects have resolved and I am feeling much better. According to my doctor and other reading I have done, Prozac/fluoxetine stays in your system so taking it every other day is effective.

Thanks for You r reply. Yeah, I think that’s why my dr said every few days. Instead of getting a new prescription when the dosage was upped, I would just take the 20mg every day instead of every 3.
